Moose Story
« on: April 22, 2012, 12:27:15 PM »
Apologies in advance for this being in the wrong section.  I would have put it in the "Round the 'Ole Pot-Bellied Stove" thread, but I wanted you guys to enjoy this story first.  It really happened.

Moose up a pole--Columbia Falls, MT
When you think you've seen everything.... Without the picture, this would be hard to believe.
Pogo Moose Incident - Columbia Falls, Montana. North Western Energy crews were laying new power cables which were strung on the ground for miles. The moose are rutting right now and very agitated. He was thrashing around and got his antlers stuck in the cables. When the men (miles away) began pulling the lines up with their big equipment, the moose went up with them. They noticed excess tension in the lines and went searching for the problem. He was still alive when they lowered him to the ground. He was a huge 60 inch bull and slightly teed off!

As Quick said this happened in Alaska.

2004 while stringing wire for the Anchorage to Fairbanks Intertie, this Moose got tangled in the wire.  Yes it was still alive and kicking when they lowered it to the ground, but it died minutes later.  This took place just north of Healy Alaska, in the Ferry Trail area.  I've got some real close ups of the Moose hanging, and on the ground, somewhere here.  And Yes, it was a big Bull Moose, 1800 to 2000 pound range.

SD - I thought that the moose was put down by the Energy crew, after being told to do so by Econ.

OldSchoolRanger:  The way I heard it from one of the crew, once on the ground the Moose fell.  Every time it tried to get up it would fall.  They called F&G and the Troopers, the only ones that can legally put it down.  But in just a matter of minutes it fell and quite breathing.  It died before the troopers or F&G could get there.

I know it's stupid, but only Fish and Game, and the Troopers, can legally put an injured animal down.  In the late 70s and early 80s I worked for the State of Alaska Dept of Agriculture.  I was a Sworn Officer, and carried a badge.  I shot two Moose one night that had been hit by a Semi.  I got into a lot of trouble over that one.  The only thing that saved me was that I was working for the state.  I was told never to do that again.

When I lived in Eagle River, a car had hit a cow moose.  People on the scene wanted to put it down, because it had a broken leg.  F&G was called.  F&G got there and refused to put it down, because it had a calf.  That cow raised that calf, and produced two more, before being killed by wolves.

I loved hiking in the Eagle River area when I was stationed at Elmondorf AFB back in the early '90s.
