Ruger #1 243 win
« on: January 29, 2004, 09:08:06 AM »
Instead of spending a ton of cash to accurize my Rem 700 243 I am going to sell it an buy either a Browning low wall or a Ruger #1 in 243 win.  I have read about the troubles with the forearm and trigger on the #1 and was wondering what the concensus is here on the #1?  Seems like with a couple adjustments the #1 would be the way to go for the $$.  Does the Hick's accurizer really make a difference?

Hi there.  My one rifle is a #1.  The trigger was ehhh.  Check out Brownell's for a Moyers trigger and you'll be much happier.  Try a Speed Lock replacement hammer, too.  You'll have a much slicker, faster action.

Oh, and unless you are better with tools than me, let your gunsmith install them.

I've heard alot of stories about the forend of the #1, but in hunting-type situations, where you shoot 1 or 2 shots, I've never had much trouble.  That's just my experience though.

I've had a ball with my #1.  Good shooting.

PS:  Pardon my ignorance;  what's a Hick's accurizer?

I saw a Hick's accurizer on ea brown & co. web site.  It is a small block that attaches under the forearm.  It is so possed to allow you to adjust tension against the barrel for optimum performance.  Sounds kinda screwy to me?

Oh, yeah.  I remember reading about those little do-hickeys somewhere.  I suppose that if you really have problems with vertical stringing or whatever, you could give one a try.

A friend of mine with a #1 said to try this as a cheap alternative:  cut a piece of hard plastic, such as from a muzleloading sabot, so it fits snuggly between the barrel and the forend hanger.  This is supposed to dampen the oscillations caused by the two pieces of metal (barrel and hanger) being 'rung' during firing, or somesuch.  Did I mention that this friend has way too much free time on his hands?

I've never had much trouble with stringing, even when I sit down and fire 20 rounds at a time.  Maybe I'm lucky.

Michbob.

I have a Ruger #1 in .243, and  use  a piece of rubber from an inner tube between the hanger and the barrel. I originally read that in an Elmer Keith article from 1982 or there abouts.

I get consistent 1" groups with a 100 Sierra, either BTSP or spitzer, and enough RL-22 to average 3000 fps.

hi I have a few #1's and love them...my first one was an 06 in mid 70's and it didnt group well at all, with work on bedding and forend it shoots 5/8" at 100 yards consistanly...I have others that shoot great out of the box...my newest one is a #1B in 280 Rem....first 2 shots touching the third will be an inch to inch and a half away...guess I will try some of the new solutions...I have found all my old #1's (red butt pad) most of them in mid 70's have a trigger that is second to none in my oppinion...the new ones like my 280(black pad) bought 3 or 4 years ago suck to put it mildly..
gotta love the sue happy people in this world!!!...I found the Moyers trigger and had it installed and am very happy with my new 2# pull...try one you will like it as before i found it I swore I would never buy another #1 new but have now changed my mind....hahaha...anyway those are my thoughts on the subject.....WW1
