Since nobody else has much to say I'll take this opportunity to brag about my 30-06 a bit. It is an old 1975 or so vintage Remington 700 ADL that I bought cheap at a gun show. Originally a 270, I fitted it up with a more recent production 30-06 factory barrel. I dovetailed it for a Lyman 17 globe sight and fitted an old Lyman rear. Epoxy bedded, trigger tuned, and that is about it.
I had been playing with various paper patched loads for the last year in this rifle and yesterday finally hit on the combination. Lee 200gr. bullet, no gas check, cast from 50/50 pure lead and wheelweights. Sized to .303" and patched with 9# onionskin to .309". Loaded over 57gr. WW780 plus .3cc BPI shot buffer, and hand seated into cases sized with a Lee collet die. Velocity is running 2550 fps, groups at 200M were a little less than 3 inches, and once zeroed I had no problem hitting the highpower silhouette rams at 500M off the bench. Considering my old eyes that don't see like they used to, I would say it is working quite well. Anytime I can get performance like this with bullets that are free except for my time making them, I am rather happy with it.
