New Puppy
« on: April 23, 2012, 04:04:59 PM »
After our poor ol' German Shepard Major passed on we figured our Great Pyr Angel needed a new brother to play with.  She triet to get me to chase her every morning, but I'm just to old to frolic with an active dog.   :(

Now I know I told Major that they ain't nuthin like a young woman to get an old dog's blood to pumping, and she managed to get him to get him a little exercise, but a nap was more important to him most of the time.   :D

So one of Kathie's friends calls her about this male rescue Great Pyre.  About the same age as Angel but the boy had a tough life...  :-\

Next thing you know he's at the house on the "foster to adopt" program.  It took a couple of weeks but Angel has accepted him and it's play time!   ;D

I tell ya, I don't worry about anything messin with Kathie or the property with these two around!   :D

That is even though I call them my "Miniture Great Pyrnees" Since they are both just under the minimum weight for a female (80 lbs) and a male (100 lbs).  But he (George) is still porking up!   ::)

Great Pyrs are great dogs.

You've got stock in a field somewhere?  Sheep, cows?

You did a good thing, giving a hurting dog a home...and yes, those Pyrs can be very "possessive"...

Nope, not since I sold my homestead years ago...  :(  These two and Kitty are just house pets.   ;D

Ya know, I think these no kill rescue groups are great.  I could never understand why someone would pay a bunch of money for a puppy from one of those pet stores when there are so many great animals out there needing to be adopted...  :-\

I agreed.  Mine have all been rescues and were/are great dogs.

I have a nieghbor up the road that has a GP,  He thinks his purpose in life is to watch after their herd of goats.  When we walk by he runs up to the fence like he's going to bust threw and eat us alive.

Bozeman can't quite figure out our Plott Hound, Freesia though.  Plott's were bread to hunt bear and wild boar and fear nothing.   I don't think that Freesia thinks she is a bad *ss  I think she just doesn't have the sence to know when to be scared.  She's not the sharpest tool in the shed but we love her anyway.

fine addition to the family Richard!     Tanya and I have three rescues and they have turned out to be the best dogs I have ever had.     She'll be taking our Golden Retriever mix up to Cleveland, Ga tomorrow for a week of Search and Rescue training in the woods and hills.    She also shares the dogs good disposition with a nursing home twice a month (therapy dogs).    I have truly learned the meaning of Man's Best Friend

Over the years we have adopted several dogs from rescue centers, most have turned out to be great pets/companions, and it makes you wonder why they were there to begin with?

We currently have three dogs and a cat, I bought the German Shepard so she could be trained as a therapy dog used in teaching kids to read, the others a miniature schnauzer and poodle were rescue dogs. The cat is a stray that showed up on my front porch one cold December day with it’s right eye hanging out.  The wife tried to turn it in to the rescue folks but they couldn’t take it, we nursed him back to health, saved his eye and just kept him.  We live in a rural area and use to have rats and mice in the sheds and barn, I haven’t seen one since the cat showed up.

This past November we lost our old Schnauzer after 14 years (also a rescue brood bitch from a puppy mill). Three weeks ago I stopped the SPCA to drop off a load of aluminum cans and spotted a young lady bringing in a small female Schnauzer (about three years old); she had been found along a busy highway.  I looked her over and knew immediately I wanted her, she stayed for two weeks to see if they could find the owner, when no one showed up to claim the dog they called me. I brought her home and she was accepted by the other dogs and the cat, today it’s like she has been here all her life, just one happy pack.

As I said, it is hard to understand why these dogs are not claimed, the Schnauzer is exceptionally smart, evidently someone spent a lot of time training her, she is well mannered, will sit, stay, fetch and do other tricks.  When I get rteady to go out she fetches her leash to go with me, she loves riding in the truck.

Yes, there are lots of good dogs in shelters, I recommend looking there first when shopping for a new pet/friend.

[/size]There are probably as many reasons as there are dogs. We obtained our rescue dog a couple of years ago when he was about one year old. Wonderful dog. He had ended up in the shelter after getting away from his young female owner who claimed she could come up with the money to spring him and her boyfriend didn't want him back. Less than two weeks after we adopted him this girl contacted the shelter demanding her dog back. NO WAY!!! She had three months to get him back before we adopted him.

Sorry for the loss of an old friend.

Thanks Diganali.  Major was a great friend.  We got him from a rescue organization when he was about 6 months old.  He was 13 when he died not long ago.  I cried like a baby.   :'(
She's not the sharpest tool in the shed but we love her anyway.

That's like our new Pyre George.  He big and dumb as a dog can come but he's stronger than a country hoss... Apologies to Jim Croce!   ;D  And fear, as well as instant obedience to commands, are not in a Pyre's vocabulary!   :D

Hey Painless!  I remember you telling me that Tanya was interested in that.  Let us know how the training turns out.  Uh, she left you alone for a week?  No adult supervision?  Hummmmm,  :-\

Sorry, I know how bad that hurts...  :(

When we brought George home our cat, who usually hides at the first hint of a strange dog, walked over to him and they touched noses.  They've been Friends ever since.  It took Angel a few days to accept George but they're a regular Bonnie and Clyde now!

Same with George!  He was picked up running loose.  They were able to locate the owner but when they tried to talk to him he told them to keep the &%$@ dog and hung up on them!  I can't understand it.  He's big, slobbers a lot, but he's gentle with people (kids) and acts almost starved for affection and gratefull for any he gets!   :-\

I guess we all wonder how people can abandon these fine animals, but I guess it's like Guz says:

There are probably as many reasons as there are dogs.

When you see all these neglected animals that just want a person to love it makes me wish I could adopt them all.  Especially the old ones.  Their last few years should be happy ones!
