Ruger Single Six Hunter

I got the hots for a Ruger SS Hunter. I mainly want to set it up for .22 WMR for small varmint hunting.  I would like to get some feedback before I spend that kind of money on a Hunter and a scope. Back in the late 60's I had a Super Single Six that was ready to go right out of the box. Light and smooth trigger pull and just no tweaking to be done.   That was before lawyers got into the gun making business.  What can I expect now from the Single Six Hunter?  Also, scope preference would be helpful. Thanks for any information anyone can share.

I just got rid of one.  Got it from a friend that just had to have it, then a week later he sold it to me.  Deal was too good to pass up.
 
As far as the gun, it was nice.  Very smooth and crisp trigger, pretty accurate (more so with the 22 magnums).  I once shot a fly at 7 yards with it.
 
I never put a scope on it, so I cannot speak to that.
 
Only reason I got rid of it was, I was in the market for a carry pistol, so I did some swapping.
 
I don't think you can go wrong with the single six hunter.

Thanks for your reply, Tim.  I was wondering if any one on here owned one. I have one on order. My LGS tried all his suppliers and nobody had one in stock. I looked on Rugers website and they said they were out of that model.

For what its worth, Jays Sporting Goods in Clare, MI has a new one in stock, as well as a used one (The used one is my old one, very well cared for, and probably less than 500 rounds through it, complete with the box and papers, both cylinders and scope rings).  Perhaps your dealer could get ahold of Jays and work a deal.

I love the single action Rugers. Have owned many and still do. In my opinion the Single Six Hunter is the top of the line in it's catagory. Unless you'd be happier with a semi auto like the MK III you can't go wrong with this gun. My favorite handgun scope is the Bushnell 2x6 Elite 3200.  Would be a potent package for those varmits you're wanting to hunt.

Thanks agin, Tim. I will see what my LGS says.  kynardsj, I am buying one mainly because it shoots .22 WRM. I used to shoot a .22 K Hornet in a in a Winchester Hi Wall and a .256 Win. Mag. in a T/C pistol.  Sold both and got out of reloading.  Even got out of shooting due to my traveling job. Now I'm old and want to get back in the game.  ;D   I don't want to get back into reloading, so I figure to put together a rig that I can pop crows and an occasional coyote.  I figured the .22 WRM would be the cheapest way to go, but there are not quality handguns in that caliber. I've rambled enough.

My BIL has been looking for one of these also. The guy he deals with couldn't find one from any of his sources either. I got on a couple of the auction sites and found 5 or 6 right off. New and used with a wide stretch in prices.

Dixiejack, I got rid of my Hornet rifles too, if my 22Mag wont do it, I decided I should go up in cartridge, or even caliber, than the old H. The Lil' Maggie is always ready to go, even if I didnt find any 'bench time'.
I have a '77 SSS, 6.5" and put the Mag cyl. in it (just today) and even out to 50yds with open sights/my old eyes I hit the soup can pretty regular, and scared it a bunch (standing Weaver using Win. Dynapoints). Im going to leave it this way and use my old 3 screw 5.5" as the dedicated 22LR...........(the 'spearmentin' never ends).

UPDATE---Went to GA and found one for $575, but several other non-hunter model w/o rings $100-150 less.  This is no problem with b-square clamp on bases.  I put one on a Ruger Blackhawk .41 Magnum 25 yrs ago and it hasn't budged yet and has taken 38 big game animals in that time.  My bear/elk loads are at the top of the charts, hit tennis balls at 50 yds and softballs at 100, and shooting a heavy Keith bullet, rock the house.

Everyone, thanks for the feedback and advice.  A friend of mine found a NAPA auto parts store that also has a gun store in the back.  My friend said the owner told him he usually kept between 800 to a 1,000 new and used guns in stock.  The town has a population of 2,000 and the auto parts/gun dealer draws clients from 3 large metro areas.  Hope to go this weekend. Maybe I will come home with a bucket of guns.
