Can you help me identify this cannon?
« on: April 25, 2012, 03:27:31 PM »
Last fall I was up in Connecticut patrolling power lines after their big snow storm and I spotted this cannon on the side of the road. I took a few pictures but didn't have time to get any measurements or look for markings. Do you know what make it is? I'm not sure where "Dale" is, but I think I saw it on a trip between Norwalk and New Milford.

I kind of thought it was a Blakely due to the trunnion band and tapering rear reinforce, but somehow the knob looks weird and I haven't seen a picture of a Blakely that looks like this. I measured my thumbnail and the bore appears to be right around 3 inches in diameter. The bore was mostly plugged up, but I couldn't see any evidence of rifling. Click on the pictures for a high resolution one.

Looks to me to be one of the versions of a Lyle Lifesaving Gun.

I'm pretty sure this same cannon is the subject of an article in the latest ARTILLERYMAN.

As Cannonmn mentioned, this gun is the subject of an article in Artilleryman Magazine.  At the end of the article is this offer;

Free sounds like a pretty good price to me.  Thought I would pass it along in case someone has any interest.
