222 Load Recommendations
« on: April 25, 2012, 03:59:31 PM »
Well now I've done it.  I bought my first T/C a few months ago in 22 hornet, tomorrow I pickup another one for my wife!  Her T/C comes with a 222 rem barrel if I remember correctly its a 10" barrel.  But I need to make some ammunition for it.  I have Hornady 40 and 50 gr bullets and some brass.  I have a few different powders the one I thought I'd start with is Lil Gun.  So what do you folks think what will work best?  Should I change to a different powder and if so what would you recommend?

I have never owned a Contender in 222. I went with the 221 Fireball. I do have an old Contender load manual. They list no load for Hornady 40 gr. bullets or Lil Gun. For 50 gr. they suggest IMR 4198 and Win. 748.
Sierra lists IMR-4227 for both 40 & 50 gr. bullets. Just checked. This darn manual is 19 years old so i don't think i was much help. :-[

Lil Gun is not listed for any bullet weights in the .222 on the Hodgdon website...

I use H-335 and a 50 grain Hornady V-Max...

I think Lil'Gun is much too fast of a burner for the 222...

Good-luck...BCB

I own a 10" in .222 and I have had better luck with 4227 (Imr in my case).

It comes down to the case capacity vs. barrel length and matching powder burnt efficiently.

I don't own a .22 Hornet barrel yet but it's my understanding that they are the gems in "ten" vs. the .222.  This is why Remington brought the .221 Furball with less capacity for their 10 3/4" pistol.  If it had been as simple as chambering a .222 Rem they would surely not gone to the trouble of developing another round.

Best regards

Well thanks for your input I think I'll try the 4227 powder for the first rounds and see how that works out.  I did bring the new pistol home today and hope to have it out on Sunday.  I found a caliber conversion in the barrel to use 22 mag in the 222 barrel. Now I wonder how well they work? I've never used on myself so again I'm looking here for more information.  Thanks again for the good thoughts on powder.
