Deer tracking dog
« on: April 25, 2012, 04:21:32 PM »
What breed of dog would be a good choice for tracking down a wounded deer.  My blue heeler is fairly good at this, but she will not bark when she finds the deer and unless she returns to me and then goes back to the deer, I have no way of knowing if she found it.  It is a little easier to work her in daylight but about impossible at night.
I do not want a dog that will chase live deer.

Teach her to work on a long lead and you will work together.  Practice laying blood tracks with a hide at the end.  There is a good book you'll find very useful called "Tracking Dogs for Finding Wounded Deer" by John Jeanneney.  I think it was mentioned in the other thread.

I agree with Wessin. In fact, here in Missouri, it's the law. It's legal to track wounded deer with a dog but ONLY if it's kept on a leesh. That eliminates any chance of the dog chasing live deer simply for the sake of it running deer by a hunter which is both illegal and highly frowned upon..
