The Catholic Church is indeed cutting its own throat on alot of issues, but one it is still willing to take the hard stance on is the murder of the unborn. In vitro fertilization as it is most commonly practiced, involves several steps contrary to what Catholicism sees as acceptable- the main one being that many ova are fertilized, producing many embryos (i.e. LIVING beings). then the "best" of them are selected for implantation in the mother while the rest are destroyed. Equivalent to abortion.
