Senate Votes for $11 Billion Bailout of U.S. Post Office    The Senate offered a lifeline to the nearly bankrupt U.S. Postal Service on Wednesday, voting to give the struggling agency an $11 billion cash infusion while delaying controversial decisions on closing post offices and ending Saturday delivery.

By a 62-37 vote, senators approved a measure which had divided mostly along rural-urban lines. Over the past several weeks, the bill was modified more than a dozen times, adding new restrictions on closings and cuts to service that rural-state senators said would hurt their communities the most.

The issue now goes to the House, which has yet to consider a separate version of the bill.

  The simplest answer would be for the congress to let UPS or FedEx bid competitively to take over the US Mail service.  I bet a single letter would no longer be near a half dollar...and junk mail would slowly dry up.
   But then the libs would lose their union flunkies....and govt would shrink a bit.. ..

I agree.  UPS and fedex would be more effecient.  government employees have no incentive to do a better job, therefore, higher prices.

IG. That would make too much sense, aint gonna happen. They talked about closing some post offices but don't think they have. The smaller communities here have  very small trailers that provide service, some maybe 10ft X 25 ft.  2 small towns I know of have less than 20 residents but of course do serve the surrounding farms and communities. Lots of waste at the top, start cutting. Our carrier is the same from 30 years ago, contracted delivery, she provides her own vehicle. Lots of waste in the cities with vehicles WE provide, instead of contracting the work. POWDERMAN.

It was a setup deal! Just enough Republicans voted for the bill to pass it. The old two headed snake working together.Nothing new!
