some people have no respect!
« on: April 27, 2012, 12:17:50 AM »
wifes mother died and weve been swamped with company. One nephew about 45 years old and his 19 year old son were here. they wanted to shoot some guns real bad so i broke out an ar and a couple 22s for them. they liked the bearcat better then anything so i left them in the yard with one of my bearcats and a brick of shells. They probably shot 3/4s of a brick out of it. I told them when they were dont to leave it on the table in the loading room. I went to clean it today and when  was done i put it back together and it would cock. I got looking at it and the little pin in the base pin that pushes on the transfer plate was broke off. Im sure what they did was shoot it until it broke and then stuck it on the table and didnt say a word to me and then took off. I could care less that they broke it. I break guns all the time. There mechanical and they break! But to take off without even saying a word really ^^^^^ me off!

Yep, that'd put em on my NO SHOOT list.  8(  I have a few family members I won't let touch my guns now, albeit nothing that severe.  Mainly not cleaning them after being in rain.  Had a couple speckles of rust on one.  8(

i like to  try to keep the best opinion  possible about people unless they dont give me any other choice .
is it possible they are ignoraant enough about guns in general that they might have not realised it was broke ,..  might have just thought it was malfunctioning  due to being dirty ?

ya george i thought the same thing. What ticked me off was they stuck it in the loading room on the table and didnt say a word. Seeings that it would even cock im sure they knew something was wrong.  Ive never been anal about my guns. Heck id lone about any of them even my customs to about anyone i know. Id probably set them up with some ammo too before they left the house and i wouldnt be a bit angry if one came back broke as long as it wasnt obvious abuse. Things break!  But i would expect them to man up and admit it rather then hope i discover it later and blame myself. I guess i should have know better. they were not only from wisconson but were city living wisconson people :P

Darn Yoopers.  I understand the city part but Wisconsin?  Lots of us resemble that statement!

Hello, Lloyd.  I know this is kind of late..but why don't you call them up?  let them know you know they broke it & give them a price on replacement part (I would add gunsmith installation fee also).  Let them know in no uncertain terms that the next time you see them, you expect your money.
The beauty of this is, for the price of a small part..you will never see those jokers darken your doorway again!

I know this is an old post but it is new to me.  I had similar incident. I loaned a gun to a friend who was just getting into hunting.  I knew he would have it a long time.  He called on day and said he was bringing my rifle back.  I wasn't home when he returned it and the wife slid it under the bed but forgot to tell me.  A few weeks later she remembered and I pulled it from the case expecting to clean it and stick it in the safe.  It wasn't my rifle.  Same make and caliber but this rifle was brand new with a brand new scope on it.

Long story short he leaned it against his truck and forgot it.  It fell and he drove over it breaking the stock, bending the barrel and crushing the scope.  He was too ashamed to tell me so he bought a new rig.  I got my old rig back. Leupold replaced the scope and I was able to salvage the action.  I could have saved the barrel but it would have been 17 inches long.  I had a new barrel installed and bought a used stock.  Then I gave it to him.  We are still friends and hunt together but he will not even touch one of my guns.

I don't consider myself a selfish man, but when it comes to my firearms, I will not loan them to anyone.  If a direct family member wants to shoot, I gladly go with them, but I'm right there looking out for both the shooter and my gun.
If a non-family member wants to go shooting, "I say, "Sure.  That would be great.  What kind of gun are you bringing?"

I'm a hunter and own a farm that has pretty good deer hunting on it, and I often take people that hunt very little. I keep "loaner" guns just to loan out to folks that don't have a decent gun. I've got an old Remington 742 in 30-06 that a number of my guests have used to kill deer. And I've got an old 870 that I've loaned out for other kinds of hunting. No way am I loaning out my deer gun or my primary turkey gun to anyone. I count on them to feed my starving family, so I can't take the risk. ;)

I've developed this policy because of lessons learned the hard way. Twice I have loaned guns to deacons in my church, and didn't think I'd ever get them back. One kept a shotgun for 3 years. A friend that's a machinist once told me he could fix an old SXS 12 gauge that was giving me a problem, so I carried it to him. That was 34 years ago, and he never fixed it and says he doesn't know where it is. I'm kinda resolved to never getting that one back.

And I am happy to let anyone shoot one of my single actions while I am watching, but they ain't leaving my sight with them. :)
