Best replacement for Remington Buckhammers
« on: April 29, 2012, 06:40:37 AM »
I started using Brennekes in my 20 gauge USH and they worked pretty good for me knocking off several feral hogs and one doe. However the Buckhammers in either length were more accurate and seemed to thump things better. I felt the Brennekes were not going as fast as advertized but the Buckhammers were pretty close to advertized velocity.

Why are you wanting to change from the Buckhammers?  They are cheap, accurate and hammer down on whatever you hit with them.

best replacement slugs would be the Lyman sabot shotgun slugs, 525 grains in 12 gauge and 350 grains in 20 gauge.  A 350 grain projectile with a velocity of 1400 fps smacks a deer or hog with 1523 ft lbs of kinetic energy per square inch at the point of impact -- harder than a 44 magnum.  In short, it delivers serious smackdown power.

Also, the Lyman sabot shotgun slugs can be loaded into standard shotshell hulls and fold crimped.   A 25-pack of the Lyman loads would be somewhere in the neighborhood of $7.50 as opposed to 10.00 or so for 5 rounds.

I load Lyman 525 grain slugs into a Remmy Gun Club hull with a Win 209 primer, WAA12 wad, and 25 grains of Herco.   It tears the insides out of Florida's demon swampwalkers.

Hope this helps.

I hear the Buckhammers are discontinued and need a similarly priced slug load. I have enough for this year probably but next year I am going to be testing slugs again.

Holy cow, never heard about them being discontinued.  I always thought they were great slugs.  The only complaints I ever heard was about recoil.  I wonder why they were discontinued.  They were about the only inexpensive slug I could find that shot well at 100 yards.  I moved on to Accu-tips for less recoil and flatter trajectory but started out with the buckhammers in my ultra slug hunter.

Best advice i ever got with a rifled slug was to buy as many different brands of sabots as possible and then shoot for group size. Once you find the ones your gun likes to shoot stick with them.

Rich Knoster sells DIY slug kit which is identical design to the Buckhammers. Or should I say his design was out years before Big Green came out with the Buckhammer. I've been shooting his slugs for about 15 years and pretty much get one hole groups at 50 yds with them. Easy to reload, cost effective, accurate, and gets the job done. Or you can buy them as Rottweil now reloads them commercially. Here is his link if interested.

I still find it hard to believe that almost a year (12-25-11) after I seen the first post that buck hammers slugs are no more Remington still list them on their web site.
I guess I should take the time and call them and ask the horse what the real deal is rather than relie on so and so company doesn't have them in stock.
I know I was in a gun shop two weeks ago to buy some pistol ammo and they had 2 3/4 inch 20ga and 3 inch 12 ga in stock on the shelf.
But I really don't need to as I bought enough to last the rest of my life last winter (12-28-11). Maybe a well spent dime for some one who doesn't have any to spend to see if the rumor is true?
