A Fossil Question
« on: April 29, 2012, 06:20:40 PM »
While walking a creek yesterday, fishing for Smallmouth's with my son, my son found this unusual rock on a gravel bar. It's 7" long, 3 1/2" wide, and 1 1'2"  thick at it's thickest point. It  almost resembles some kind of reptile skin or possibly a type of turtle shell such as a large snapping turtle. The patern overlaps for 1 1/4" on the other side but only along one edge of the length. Definitely something unusual. Anyone have any idea what it  might be? Keep in mind that the area where it was found was once all ocean.

No clue.  It could be anything, but my guess it is some type of impression from a reptile scale of some sort.

Take it to a University near you that has a good  Geology dept. They may be able help you out. If you find out what it is, please give us the answer. I'm very curious as to what it actually is.

When I get the chance I'll take it and a few other things I've found over to College of the Ozarks. It's just a few miles from my house, just about 15 minutes away. will let you know what I find out. :)
