Bear encounter
« on: May 02, 2012, 02:47:45 PM »
Well, I shot soo many bows that I actually got kinda tired of asking people to shoot the bows at shops. I ended up getting a bear encounter. Not because it shoots better than a hoyt or a mathews (it doesnt) not becasue it the fastest bow and not becase it is the abolsute cheapest in its repsective clas (although its close) but because it seems to do pretty well at all of the catagories for the money. I started off thinking I had to have a mission bow, then I found that most bows for 300-400 shoot similarly. The issue became how I shot it and the value of accessories that it comes with. Mission really had no incentive to choose thier package bow setup, diamond and bear really did. I get it set up and tuned over the next few days. If anyone is interested, I'll report back with results. EJ

I havent gotten any arrows for it yet but will be getting it set up next week. In all honesty, for 150 extra bucks, the diamond outlaw is a noticeably faster, smoother shooting and quieter bow. The bear isnt horrible in those three catagories but the extra money shows. Now the diamond has a severe "lump" at the end of the draw that the bear doesnt have. More as it develops,,,,

Ten years ago that bow would have been described as revolutionary.  I can't get as caught up in the hype and oneupsmanship any more. Honestly, you have arrived as far as I'm concerned. You found a nice bow that shoots well at a price that you find appealing.

You can just about bet that it is "hotter" than the bows that were killing deer "just fine thank you" twenty years ago. I will admit the new compounds are so much quieter than they were years ago, I'll give them that.

Hunting skills are more important than the bow, and it's a rare thing that bow tech saves the day. I do understand the pride of ownership and the flawless feel of a super high quality piece of gear. I would hate to explain all of my gear purchases. ;)  My bows have been bang for the buck affairs from the beginning. Here's the thing, they have been my bucks. Darned easy to spend other peoples money though. ;D

This is a very misleading title for a thread.

PPINE, I apologize for the lack of a good story about enctountering a bear, but it wasnt intended to mislead. The name of the company is bear and the bow model name is encounter. If you take a look at thier website you'll see the bear attack, the mauler, so on and so forth.

Alright, I got it set up and bought some red head carbon fury arrows. It shoot really nice. A bit more noise than the diamond outlaw, but the draw is noticably smoother. Got real tight groups out of it at 25 yards and i like everything about it but the peep. It just seems as though you see too much through it. Over all, really satisfied for the money. I'd reccomend it for a 400 package, if you have 100 more to spend get the daimond outlaw, mission endeavor or mission riot. EJ

alright, I got to shoot it some more and am more impressed. I was worried about the handle initially, but after sending 75 arrows down range, I dont think its an issue. I did have the draw weight reduced to 60 pounds from 70, so I am sure that had alot to do with it.
I really does shoot smooth and fairly quiet. I am more impressed with it the more I shoot it.
The sight that comes with it is my current point of contention. I am destroying arrows at 25 yards but the sight just seems too open. I think It might be better for hunting as it is easier to aquire the sight, but it just seems too open. Since I am shooting accuratly with it, I'll keep it on there for now.

I think that its the same site that came with my bear charge. It seems a bit coarse but i've wrecked one arrow already and I haven't shot a bow since I was 12. And never a compound bow. I chose the charge over the higher priced pse stinger cuz it felt better so I understand what to are saying..shoot it, if you like it buy it. They are all very close.
