17 Remington drew blood today

In my part of Maryland we have about 3 inches of snow on the ground. I felt bad for the birds and put a bunch of of bird seed around the deck and in several feeders. I have been seeing little rodent foot prints all around the seed so I made up several .17 Remington rounds using just .177 lead pellets and magnum small rifle primer. (no powder).

I was  watching the birds eat when I saw it. A fat mouse running around eating. I went to the gun safe, got the contender, loaded one of the primer powered rounds. when I go back to the door the mouse was still eating and did not notice or care that i was 10 foot away in the door way. I took carefully aim and squeezes the trigger. the pellet struck  him right behind the left front leg and went on trough and bounced around on the deck. the mouse dropped in its tracks and never knew what hit him.
This seams to be a very effective, quiet  and cheep use for the 17 Remington

Good shooting rickyp. Sounds like not much goes on in Maryland,or maybe a little bit of cabin fever. Like the rest of us. Here in the great state of OHIO it's been pretty cold also. Went shooting last weakend with  my new 10'' 44 Mag, it was COLD !!! Same for this weekend. Will try to get out Sat. or Sun.          MAX HUNTER

not relay cabin fever and hunting season is now over until spring turkey.
just looking for a way to shoot my barrel. I have had it for quite a few weeks,  it has ether been too cold snowing or raining to get to the range. and the mouse was a target of opportunity

I've done the same with a .22 K-Hornet and .22 cal pellets

A magnum small rifle primer gives a 14 gn. Crosman pellet about 400 fps.  I've used them on starlings out to about 10 yds, and they do well.  They'll group out of my 10" barrel into 1/2" at that range.  I've also used them for indoor target practice, but be careful about ventilation as primers alone produce lead vapors.

I've also tried it in a carbine length .223, but the longer barrel cost me velocity.  A primer only has so much punch!

soooo how big was the critter???

did you get the appropriate measurements for the B&C record books ???

I have used airguns in the house and birdshot from a .22 before but never a centerfire.  I might just have to do some investigating.

Hey Rickyp....what are you useing in the 223?  just a bullet and a primer?  Just curious as I have a 223 barrel that I have not been able to shoot yet and it's driving me nuts!

I just got me some 22 cal pellets and take a sized and primed 223 case.
Use mag primers NO POWDER and just push the pellet in themouth of the case about 1/2 way

My favorite recipe was a .22 hornet case drilled out on the backside to hold a shotgun primer, then a .22 caliber pellet inserted backwards into the case (worlds largest .22 caliber hollowpoint).

Shot a sparrow once at about 15 yards and all I saw was a puff of grey feathers.
