Beauty is only skin deep

  They say beauty is only skin deep....But ugly is to the bone!!!!!
 
 
I was given a Talo Squire 20 gauge. It has been getting kicked around in a closet and the stock had a few dings but the gun was otherwise un shot. I figured I could use something to keep my hands busy while I watched TV and the stock to frame was really a bad fit so I started sanding. And sanding and sanding. I thought I had done a good thing when I finally got the stock to fit the action and had striped the old dark spray on finish off....That was until I started staining the blond wood stock.
   The stain was a nice color but the wood.....well!!!!!! After the third coat of oil, there were dark spots that would apear and disapear as the stock moved. I have a gun or two that this effect looks good on but this is not one of them.
   I guess if you want to spend the time to make a stock look good, you need to start with a better piece of wood.
    And for my next trick.......I may try my hand at painting a stock.   Wish me luck!

Putty and Paint make me the carpenter I ain't.
 
If you don't like what you got then go ahead an paint the wood.  There are a number of folks that have painted stock sets that are very nice.

That's the equivalent of a spray on tan , for a stock.
