Question #1-- is there a recoil difference between a 12ga and a 20 ga, both shooting the same weight load at the same speed?

Question #2--what is your opinion of the H&R factory screw in chokes versus one from a custom maker?

Thinking of upgrading my turkey gun, just trying to figure out which way to go. Thanks for any input.

The weight of the powder charge and weight of the gun also figure into the recoil equation.  I am guessing that unless you load your own turkey loads you will have trouble 12 & 20 ga turkey loads that have the same weight of shot.

Here's a shotgun recoil calculator.

the weight of the gun matters alot. When starting my sons out with a shotgun both favored a 12 ga 870 over a 20 shooting the same loads . The stock of the 12 was cut to youth length. The extra weight and bigger but plate both helped. That was a good side by side test as they are a close match
Many custom chokes are longer and in most cases give better patterns.A longer tube allows for ckoke constriction and a good length of paraell wall before the shot exits the bore. Briley has tubes that are long and threaded the entire way , they are good with steel shot even in larger shot sizes. You may want to lengthen the forcing cone and match the choke restriction to your bore dia. Just because a choke says mod it may not be so in your gun. A custom choke tube maker can match your bore to the tube needed to achieve the pattern you want at the distance you want it . WITH IN REASON !
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Mossberg 500 chokes fit so there are plenty of after market chokes to choose from. Rather than having a custom job done.

If you're using the same weight charge at the same velocity pure physics says the recoil will be the same if the guns both weigh the same. That's also the easiest thing to change.
When my son was old enough to shoot a shotgun I got him a 20 gauge H&R but he didn't like it cause Dad shot a 12 gauge. I ended up trading the 20 for a 12 but wrapped some birdshot in a rag and put it in the butstock to add more weight thus reducing the recoil. After a while HE CAME UP WITH THE IDEA that he could live with the recoil in exchange for the better balance. While turkey hunting balance might not be that big a concern. It's up to you.

Briley has tubes for most threads so you can enjoy the benifits of custon extended tubes for about $40.00 .

Most any choke mfr sells extended chokes for H&Rs, single shots use the same tubes as Winchesters, Browning Invector(not plus) and Mossberg 500.  ;)
