SB2 rimfire?

Just wondering if anyone has done it.  I would think that offsetting a barrel in a stub so the fp strikes the rim at 6 o'clock would be ideal.  My son is starting to shoot and his Cricket doesn't hold his interest.  Fruit, sealed hot soda cans, clay pigeons, balloons, steel plates, and paper have all been used as targets.  I'm thinking a firearm that is simple, yet to him appears more complex and grown up, may hold his interest and grow with him in the future.  I know T/C has done similar with the Encore, but for a child I cannot see spending that kind of money for such a slight interest.

ETA:  I'm guessing that the cost of stubbing a barrel and fitting the forend would be more than a Sportster even if you already had everything except the stub.  Realistically the fp would probably have to strike at 12 o'clock too in order to keep from fabricating an extractor.

is it the gun, or the caliber that is not holding his interest??  Perhaps a .22 Hornet barrel on a youth stocked SB2?  or a .410 barrel the Winchester PDX rounds are impressive on interactive targets.


If it is the gun itself, well you could go broke trying to impress the lil guy

Now there's something I didn't even think about.  The .223 is too loud for him.  Maybe a WMR or HMR to make applesauce and orange juice with?  He's only 8 (in 2 weeks) so there is plenty of time for the bigger calibers.  So far his hunting interest is only to talk loudly, his mother's influence no doubt  .  On the bright side, it is always about where to look for the animals, what we do with them after they're dead, and when we can go again.  Nothing for the pot, but a lot of fun.

Just buy a Versa Pack barrel(see Versa Pack sticky above for info) in the classifieds that came from the factory (which were stubs), they quit making them since they were costly to build for obvious reasons.

I was clueless to the Versa Pack.  Too bad they aren't made anymore.  I don't have a lot of NEF/HR experience (one .243 that was sold off), but they feel nicer than the Rossi alternative.  I guess it has been done then.

Maybe it's the single shot action? With all the bang bang shoot em up video games kids see a S/S would be underwhelming. Maybe a airsoft repeater or a .22 repeater that fits him. JMTCW.

Regardless of having a real firearm, a boy needs a repeater BB Gun! Our guys started with the little Daisy 'Buck (?)', which fit them well, then graduated to the 'Red Rider' when bigger. They can throw the buttstock behind the knee to get enough leverage to cock the looplever. Another good option in a larger size is the 'pump' model. Those bigger guns need the arm to cock 'em.
BIG fun, and the same proper gun handling rules are followed.

If you want one, post in the H&R WTB classified forum for a Versa Pack barrel, you might get lucky.  I know that a VP set (22LR/410Bore combo) was just sold recently in the classifieds.
