28 gauge for grouse/woodcock
« on: May 08, 2012, 08:10:07 AM »
Swapped my 28 gauge barrel onto a Pardner today and busted a few clay targets. The 22" barrel is from a Topper Junior Classic, makes a nice light rig for those days when a person is carrying more than shooting. I'm thinking this would be a nice grouse/woodcock gun:

The ammo is a little pricey, but available around the local stores.

Nice rig, that fact that it's in 28 makes it even nicer.

;) Up, I have an 870 in 28 ga...while it is not my primary  shotgun, and I doubt it ever will be as I am a hard core 12 bore man, it is a great ga.!!!! I have used my little 28 ga. on lots of blue grouse, and some sage grouse.. No woodcock I know of in Wy..but the 28 has knocked the big old sage grouse dead at 40 yards with 3/4 oz. loads of # 6..I really enjoy the little gun and shoot it some most falls on grouse...where it failed me most was on desert quail..now a man with a pointing dog may find it great, with flushing dogs the ranges lenghtened too fast for consistant kills with the little ga..but it is one fine ga.. and one that is very useful...enjoy...

My 28 ga is a muzzleloader, but it is a great gun on any small game, and works great on deer with PRB, so I would think a modern one would be just as good or maybe better as far as shot goes since I mine is plain cylinder bored.  Very versatile guns though.

I have taken many limit of dove with a 28, I love it. I found that when I happened to have my 12 ga pump I started missing more. I got lazy and greedy. I did not pick a target and stay with it, I tried for too many doubles and relied on more shot to make up for precise aiming. When I went back to the single gun my percentage went way back up. One fine gun.
