Nessmuk Inspired Trip
« on: May 09, 2012, 11:56:17 AM »
Last month I read Woodcraft and Camping by George Washington Sears (aka Nessmuk) and I thought it would be fun to do a “romp” in Nessmuk fashion when I go backpacking in June. First off let me say that this will not be a true-to-form Nessmuk trip but instead a trip inspired by the concepts in his book.

To start off I'll show y’all the kit pieces I have put together so far.

-Cutting tools

Here are the tools Nessmuk used and what he had to say about them:
The hatchet and knives shown in the engraving will be found to fill the bill satisfactorily so
far as cutlery may be required. Each is good and useful of its kind, the hatchet especially, being the best model I have ever found for a "double-barreled" pocket-axe.

A word as to knife, or knives. These are of prime necessity, and should be of the best, both as to shape and temper. The "bowies" and "hunting knives" usually kept on sale, are thick, clumsy affairs, with a sort of ridge along the middle of the blade, murderouslooking, but of little use; rather fitted to adorn a dime novel or the belt of "Billy the Kid," than the outfit of the hunter. The one shown in the cut is thin in the blade, and handy for skinning, cutting meat, or eating with. The strong doublebladed pocket knife is the best model I have yet found, and, in connection with the sheath knife, is all sufficient for camp use.”

And here is what I came up with:

I opted for a Case Old Forge skinning knife with a 4.5" blade, an Opinel #9 folder and a single-bit axe (due to the price and because it will double as a hammer).

-Bedroll
For a bedroll/sleeping bag Nessmuk wrote about a wool blanket sewn up one end. I did the same with two 80% wool military blankets and put a fleece liner inside:

Anyway I will update this thread as I add to the kit and have a chance to test the equipment... Stay tuned!

I hope to be working on some kind of canvas tarp shelter next.

He's mine, it was a painter's drop cloth from Lowe's cut to 8'X8'.  I soaked it in boiled walnut hulls and after it dryed I soaked it in Thompson's Water Seal.

That is just what I wanted to do. Is that a Northwest Woodsman Old Number 7 pack? I am probably going to just use an old alice pack.

It was made by Frostline and branded for another company.  I'm not sure which one it is but it's a little too big for the long haul.

This is a great thread.  People make camping and treking too complicated.  Simpler is often better.  I really like Calvin Rustrum and Col Townsend Whelen also as proponenets of simple effective camping styles.

Well here is some more of the kit I got so far.

From left to right

$1 Home made alcohol stove (For cooking when I don't feel like making a fire), 7” aluminum plate, 6”x2.5” steel dog dish for cooking (cheaper than those darn mess-kits and the plate works as a lid), Cut  down wooden spoon (for cooking and eating), Home made candles, Small wet stone, file and lastly my good old steel canteen.

Tender Box:

Inside there is a fire steel, jute twine, steel wool and char-cloth. The tin also has a hole in the top for making more char-cloth if needed.

Well I still need to work on my shelter, walking stick/tent pole and I need to get a pack. ;D

Alcohol stove at work:

Boils 2 cups of water in 3min and will burn for about 10min with 1oz of fuel.

Well I think I hit a speed bump in my backpacking plans for next month. I was chopping wood today when my axe glanced off of the log and hit my left leg cutting it to the bone. The Doctor said that I didn't hit anything important and that I should be walking again in about 2 weeks. However I will not have full use of my leg for about 6 months. I believe my Nessmuk Romp will now be a simple camping/fishing trip using the gear that his book inspired... I will continue to keep you all updated.

Well my plans for a Nessmuk-ish trip are back on track for late August, Lord willing. This way I can give my leg a bit more time to heal and have chance to maybe test out some of my home made gear before I go trekking into the woods.

Anyway here is the latest thing I have been working on. I was doing some searching on YouTube last night when I found this video describing a “Caveman Pack” and I thought it may be the perfect thing for my old school trip. So I rigged one up and put my bedrole on it to see how it would feel and it wasn't that bad. Of course I still need to test it with a full load but I my use it instead of my Alice pack in August.

Ive 'followed' GWS for over two decades. Spartan camping/trekking/walkabout has its rewards, and its suffering. The skills are what save you. Otherwise fit people die every year from panic and exposure.

Well I have been thinking on this all day and I don't think I'll be using this particular experiment on a real trek. However it has got me thinking about other more modern wood frame packs I have seen from around the 1920's. I think I am going to make a wood frame canvas pack when I make my tarp tent in June and test it on a day hike before my 4 day trip in August.

Well I got all my gear together and I am going out with my son to test it tonight. Total weight of the pack with two meals is 27 lbs. I figure when i am fully loaded for my real trip at the end of the month it should be just over 30 lbs.

Thanks again for the old pack frame Gcrank1. I'll post some photos of it loaded tomorrow.

Well I didn't get to go backpacking with my old school gear yet (due to a fire restriction in the Santa Fe  Nat. Forest), but I did get some dirt time with it and my son.

Here is the pack all set up that I got from Gcrank1:

This is my canvas tarp set up for my son and I for the night:

Here we are cooking dinner (Bannock and Bacon):

And here is the shanty with a fire by it ready for us to go to sleep:

Conclusions... My tarp is just about rain proof, a camp fire by the tent is warm but doesn't keep all the bugs away, my wool bag I heavy but warmer and more comfortable then my $60 mummy bag, I hate sleeping on the ground and need to get a hammock, lastly it is great to spend time with my son.
It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed.

Caveman Pack!, they dont know how cool that (I think) old Forest Service Packframe really is  ;) .
I like the tarp shelter for options of set up too, but you are right, it wont keep the bugs out. Save it for the seasons with fewer bugs and/or get some 'skeeter netting. I have hunkered in and worn a headnet, but its gets ugly at 80 deg. nights and earplugs to keep from hearing them trying to drill ya. Truth is that your son will enjoy it more if you use a nylon tent with lots of ventilation and good netting; no sense in making him suffer if you want him to be your camping buddy.
Fall camping is probably my favorite.

Ive never been able to be comfortable in a hammock for more than a couple of hours, at most, but if it works for you, great. Sure are a lot of good reasons to be off the ground, though in the trees mostly means closer to the bugs hereabouts. We usually try to get out to some more open ground and, if possible, breeze., and two trees close enough together might not be found.

You might want to look at "On Your Own In The Wilderness" by Col. Townsend Whelen and Bradford Angier.  On page 46 of my copy it has plans and dimensions for a packboard.  I actually made one, but don't like the way it is wider at the bottom than at the top.  The authors say to strap everything on, folded in your ground cloth.  I made a bag to go on it which I find more useful as I can use it for hauling groceries or other "stuff" (library books).

They also have discussions on various tents and shelters.  If you can find a biography of Col. Whelen he was quite the outdoorsman and really knew his stuff.  Check it out, I don't think you will be sorry for the time spent reading it.

The old TWS was specified for use on canvas, a long time ago that was removed from the label when they reformulated it. You can find how to dup the recipe online, but check cans of similar product at building centers or hardware stores. I found some that read pretty much like the old TWS. Two coats on a kingsize sheet of Egyptian long staple cotton (in a nice earthtone color) gave me an almost 10'x10' diamond shelter that will hold water as a water bag if needed. Yes, it may be more flameable, but the volatiles have long evaporated off and we must all always be aware of our fire danger anyway.
