People don't just happen into jobs.  People who tend to like working outside might become farmers.  People who tend to like science might become chemists.  People who like to argue might become lawyers.  Are there exceptions?  Of course.  Is it ignorant to suggest that personality doesn't play a roll in career selection?  Of course.

So what do people who desperately want to impose their own will on others become?  Maybe throw in a few people who always liked beating people up as long as there was significant power disparity?  Some of the paramilitary types who dream of kicking doors down?

As we are regularly told, the job is hard.  The pay is not so great.  In some places it takes a surprising amount of education to get the job.  Why would anyone want to do that?  Oh yeah, the power...  My god they love the power...

The solutions are simple, but politically very difficult.  At least in this part of the country, their unions are fairly powerful, and get bi-partisan support.  Republicans because, as you can see in comments above, being "pro-cop" is somehow a conservative value among some, particularly if you're older.  And Democrats because they are blue collar unions.
Exactly correct. And the younger the LEO- the more dangerous. Machismo and hormones don't mix well when dealing with other people.

Not everyone will understand your journey. That"s fine. It's not their journey to make sense of. It's yours.

Hawkeye: My father warned me about you...
Chingachgook, he warned me about people like you. He said "Do not try to understand them".
"do not try to make them understand you. That is because they are a breed apart and make no sense".

While I don't deny such abuse happens, let's not paint with too broad a brush.  They are for the most part, still serving with honor.
Yes, I have always maintained... if a LEO, doctor, lawyer, pastor or priest for instance, abuses the trust placed in them..once proven, they should be punished doubly hard.  ...And anyone who falsely accuses one of the above listed, should be 'hammered' for it.
Perhaps with more video cams around (and they will come) many of these disputes can be settled with more efficacy.

I have come to the conclusion that video cameras (shoulder or badge mounted) should be on all officers when dealing with the public.  Over the last 5-7yrs, the dept. of corrections in my state has really gotten all camera crazy in the cell houses.  As much as I hate to admitt it, the cameras has really kept us in check from stepping outside our duties.  Cops need this same "dog leash" in place. They cannot be trusted- period.
It's all a hot mess...........

Not a bad idea..such can help to either convict or clear a cop.  The danger with John Doe taking a video and using it to convict cop or civilian..is it can be edited and come out completely one-sided, as in the Rodney King video..where the "News department" of national media, chose to show an "edited version" of the video.  THat editing (IMO) may well have brought on a great deal of unnecessary violence.

Ironglow, do you trust the police - agents of the state - more than you trust citizens with cameras?

I think I would give them a bit more credibility than I would Louis Farrakhan or OWS supporters with a camera.  All I am saying is no matter who tells the visual story, they should tell the WHOLE story...rather than an "edited" version of the story.

As with any other profession, doctor, surveyor or technician, you will find a "bad egg" now and then.  Let the legal system work and if the guy is guilty, I doubt he will get away with it.
Just as often, it is the LEO that gets railroaded..especially in the "border wars".  It was not long ago when a couple border cops were mistreated for shooting a drug smuggler, who tried to kill them.. in the butt !  Another, where apparently the libs expected a bicycle cop to stand and be pelted to death with stones, rather than to fight back.
[Then too, as we often find in the military and other occupations also..  "stuff" slides downhill !
And accomplishment is often sucked up hill.

Now that, sir is the gospel truth! Who will be accountable for the training these two officers received. I don't think that one has yet been asked.

I don't know that Moderators think, but I know the answer to Duk's question: they become cops of some type.

I ALSO KNOW the 'approved' and 'PC' answer to the question: people become police because they want to help people, and to serve, and to protect.

just like prosecutors want to search for justice, I say...

Wow!  :o Make  little joke and YT goes all nuclear! ::)

Tell ya what fellers, anarchy seems to be the solution y'all are looking for. Get rid of the cops, the prosecutors, heck get rid of the courts too....they just "cover up for the cops" after all, and we certainly won't need defense attornies!

Then all will be grand!

Until of course the local branch of the Hells Angels decides that your wife and kids would make nice sex slaves and you would make nice fertilizer. Your neighbors? Well they don't want to get involved...too much hassle and danger of getting hurt you know. Or maybe we can have a nice little Hatfields & McCoys get together! ;D But hey! At least we wouldn't have cops around. 8)

I'm voting 3rd party in this election by writing in Jesus Christ for president.  Sadly even if this were an option most of you would still vote Republican because "It's a two party system."

I think most agree (Even Mods) that police are a necessary evil, as is government ;)
Seriously! I think cams are a great tool in making sure the confrontation between officers and citizenry is carried out properly.(Both sides). I liked the days when no wimps or women were on the beat! Not saying there shouldn't be females on the force.(Yea! I'm a male chauv). They should be used whenever possible to handle the lady lawbreakers. Some of these guys disrespecting the law can be big and tough, and have NO respect for gender. We need officers that are capable of going to war with them if necessary. They need backup, that can do the job. ::)

The cops who used their badges and brawn to kill someone like Kelly Thomas, should be made such an example of, that no police officers would ever think about doing the same thing!

We need Police for sure, but we dam sure need to police them!

Uh huh............riiigghhtt! Someone want to give me a rational explanation of how a street cop on Steroids is protecting upper echelon government politicians? This is gonna be good I'm sure!

Not one of those links addressed my request for a rational explanation of the supposed phenomenom of "roid rage cops" protecting upper echelon politicos. ::) That's the claim made in your article, it should be easy to back up. Find me some proof the "Roid Cops" are protecting congressmen.

Meanwhile, your four links produces exactly three actual instances of steroid abuse by LE personal...hardly an epidemic........and 0 stats on the prevalence of use by cops. Tin foil stuff by the truck load there, but then when someone else tries this with YOU...you go ballistic.........come on, show me what I ask for, instead of trying to deflect.

BTW, did you look at the dates on those articles? Only one is recent, the others are several years old...and the one looks like it it fed off the old ones.

Yep, older articles--now worse situation then ever...believe it or not there are some LEO entrenched in the culture that deny a problem even exists.  Guess what? Cops aren't too good collecting stats that make them look bad.. ;) ..or releasing them..  Perhaps some cops get their roids mixed in kool-aide.... ;D
.

In any case, keep it in mind that this might be cause behind the Kelly Thomas case in post #1, and others.

Obviously you did not read what you linked too. That and your comments above show nothing more than sheer supposition...along with a sad attempt at being snide.

 • Oh father of the four winds, fill my sails!

Now what did you say your theory is why the cops beat skinny homeless Kelly Thomas to death..?

.
.....TM7

Don't know if Manuel Ramo - one of Kelly Thomas' killers - was a case of Roid Rage, or if he's just Well Fed, but he's a lot bigger than Kelly was.

http://www.ocregister.com/articles/ramos-344976-thomas-charged.html

a snipped from the article:
Quote
(DA) Rackauckas contends that Cicinelli, 39, who is free on $25,000 bail, fired his stun gun four times into Thomas and then smashed him in the face eight times with it after Thomas became nonresponsive.[/q]
(Cicinelli's attorney) Barnett has said his client's actions were "reasonable and appropriate under the circumstances, not to mention that he was not the cause of death."[/l]
Yikes... it's reasonable to stun four times, then smash face eight times... yikes!

There was a case near where I work a couple of years back where a DEA agent went all 'roid rage on a guy who just happened to run into the wrong power hungry thug at the wrong time.  As a local tax payer I am fortunate enough to have gotten to help pay off the settlement for this fine, upstanding, underpaid, underappreciated, misunderstood, public servant.

http://www.wyandottedailynews.com/component/content/article/41-top-headlines/3214-dea-road-rage-case-results-in-833250-award-to-kck-resident

The fascinating history of this case is not really even about the incident itself.  These things happen all the time.  The fascinating part is that through a round about way, a federal judge discovered that the local police department was covering for the DEA agent (who, at that time was still in the same employment!) and blew the thing into the public arena.  A poor police officer was assigned to investigate, had the gall to try and tell the truth, and got "blue walled" out of a job, and out of a clearance to get a new job.

Then just this past few weeks the local paper has been running a special about how people don't trust the police!  I've had a hard time not laughing in public for the last few weeks just thinking about that.  The police honestly don't understand why people don't trust them?!?!?!?!?   Really?!?!?!?!?

and who cares how old a link is anyway...?...its called history...

Unfortunately your old links keep referencing each other.....not really any new stuff, just repeats as if that made it somehow more pertinant. ::)

And then...you seem to have missed the earlier discussions in this thread regarding manditory random drug testing, along with the annual testing most departments have every year. :o

Bottom line this appears to be mostly hype of a few incident in an attempt to smear LE in general.

BTW, Who signs my check? The guy that you voters put in office. ;)  Apparently you are getting what you want, huh?
