A local Sav 99 in 30-30 is for sale.  Description as described:

Kinda rusty in parts.
Missing butt plate.
Wood chip missing on top of stock.
Fired last in 1992

No price, wants offer made.  What is a fair market price?

If the gun is in a safe, useable condition I'd say $100 is a good price.  If you have to get it to a gunsmith to fix up I'd say better ask how much to get it working before making an offer.

I am certianly no expert but here goes anyway

most any 99 in shootable condition is worth  probably in the neighborhood of $350 to$500

without the exact designation, to determine  the age of the gun it is that much more difficult to assign a fair price.

The fact that it is a take-down rifle, to my understanding anyway, will significantly raise the value.

The short answer is YES $100 is a heck of a deal and you should be ashamed for not jumping on it already ( assuming shootable conditition)

I suggest you come to an agreement on the price with the condition that you'll pay for a good gunsmith to look the rifle over and give you a written report concerning what cost, if any, would be involved in putting the rifle in "safe shooting condition"... and the cost to put the rifle into that condition will be deducted from the agreed-to selling price of the rifle.

If the man refuses to be reasonable and go along with this offer, then he's trying to take advantage of you and you should put our money DEEP in your pocket... and walk away!

Basically, the rifle is worth NOTHING if it's not safe to fire it.

Thanks for the feedback everyone -

I decided to purchase the 99.  It's a 30-30 carbine takedown, circa 1912.  Much of the rust was just surface rust - cleaned off easily.  There are a few of heavy rust spots on the lever that will take some doing to get removed and a couple of spots on the barrel that came off after some soaking but the finished is marred where the rust was located.  The buttstock is a tad loose where it meets the receiver.  The butt plate is missing....I don't know if the original was steel or hard rubber?  Any idea what I can/should use to clean the stock?  With a bit of TLC, I think it will make a decent and useable, cool old rifle.

I think it was worth at least the $75 I paid for it.

Alan,
You didn't say how you got the rust off.....we usually recommend using fine steelwool and a light gunoil.  On the stock, if I recall it originally was a varnished finish.  If you try rubbing it down with 0000 steelwool (no sandpaper please) and Murphy's Oil Soap to clean it up.  Probably best to remove the stocks first and check to see if there are any cracks around the tang region.  This will allow you access to the underside of the barrel as well to check for rust.  Does it have checkering?  If so, then those areas can be cleaned with the oil soap and nylon brush.  If you decide to refinish, I would use a tungoil that you rub in with your fingers.  Tape off the checkering tightly, so the finish doesn't get into it.  On the buttplate....chances are you can get a hard rubber blank and grind it to fitt the stock or look on ebay or on-line auction sites for a steel original with the Savage Indian logo.  Good Luck!

Thanks Jim -

I used 0000 steel wool and Break Free CLP to clean the rust.  It will take more than the steel wool to remove a couple of rust spots on the lever.  I assume the only thing holding the butt stock to the receiver is the one bolt?  There is no checkering on the fore-end and the barrel surface underneath has no rust.  Would you happen to know if there are on-line diagrams showing how to strip down the 99 action for a head-to-toe cleaning?

I plan on taking this carbine over to a local gunshop this afternoon to get an early "appraisal" in as is condition.  More than likely, I will not keep this rifle after all is said and done.  My primary interest 99's are the longer barreled varieties.  I don't care for carbines in any flavor.

Alan,
I searched in my usual sources for an exploded view for a pre 1,000,000 s/n model exploded view and didn't find one.  Check into the Savage 99 Site though he may have one for sale.  Lots of good information there.
