I have been kicking around the idea of getting a 20 ga. Pardner to make my dedicated turkey gun. Lighter carry and less recoil were the reasons I wanted to explore this option. So I went on the search for a full choked 20 ga. It didn't have to be pretty because I was going to probably paint it anyway. So I prowled around the classifieds and the pawn shops. I finally found a 20 ga. that was marked full on the barrel. It had a few rust "freckles" but nothing major. Well used but serviceable. Upon closer inspection, someone had cut the end of the barrel off, as the bead was gone and the crowning looked like it had been done with a mill bastard file will no attention to detail. I compared the choke with another 20 ga. shotgun on the shelf marked full, and it was close. I struck a deal with the clerk, and I bought it for $70 b/c.

So now I test fired it. Let's say "light" does not equal "less recoil". Also the lack of a bead made it difficult to tell much about the pattern. So I set out to get a bead and a recoil pad. I found a recoil pad that fits pretty good and pretty cheap. I posted about it here earlier, a Remington Supercell made for wood stock Remingtons. I also found a "stick on" bead of the fiber optic type from TruGlo. Here are some pictures of it so far. . .

I like your method for aligning the front sight.

Curious what range you will have a enough shot density for a turkey without a choke. Of course a cylinder bore usually does well when launching foster slugs.

Well it does have some choke left. I measured it with a caliper and it is around modified.

Here is an update on my 20 ga. turkey gun project. I took a break from pattern testing to install some sling swivel studs. Insted of putting the forend stud in the bottom of the forearm, I decided to put the stud in the front of the forearm. So far so good! It is more comfortable also!

You should have enough barrel thickness left to thread the inside for a Remchoke. That might help.

How is the Truglo sight bead holding up?

So far so good, I ain't really run it through the mill yet. It has just been sitting around waitin on me to do something with it. I haven't carried it around or been sliding it in and out of a case yet.

As for the choke, I don't think I am going to have to get any choke work done.

I have a H&R 20ga with a 22" barrel and a full choke, it is by far my favorite shotgun. I added a snap on fibre optic front sight and a limbsaver slip on recoil pad. It's a very enjoyable gun to shoot and carry around. I sanded the stock down and painted it OD green, it's one slick little package. Have fun with yours, it will be one you will enjoy spending time with.

I have the 22" with modified. I didn't know they made the 22" in full choke. I'm in the process of sanding my stocks down too. Also shape all of my wood stocks to straight English style.

I put a little dab of gorilla glue on the end of the stud when I screwed it in. I did not get it quite in the center, but it still worked out good. You have to be careful not to overtighten and bust the forearm.

i bought a 20ga youth compact with the nickel receiver and 22 in. choke tube barrel put a suviver stock set on it a slip on recoil pad xxf choke tube in it sweet lil light turkey gun thinking of having it tapped and putting a reddot on it

I didn't know they made a 22" barrel with removable chokes. Tried to find it on their site but couldn't. Wood love to have one in 12 or 20.

12 ga. is available in 24" & 28" and 20 ga. in 28" only. The 22" is a youth only special I believe.

if you want a nice load for turkeys and a tight pattern try hevi-shot , duck loads work well.

yes its a youth gun with choke tubes think it was marketed as a compact youth gun i took the youth stock off bought a suvivor stock set a few chokes it came with the mod tube i got a slip on limbsaver from wally world 19 bucks then put a shell holder allen brand i think they are better than the rest i tried them all n gave all but the allen brand away she shoots points and feels so good in my hands my goto turkey gun some day im going to have it drilled n taped for reddot

Here's my 20ga shorty at 18.25 threaded with a full choke wearing the camo stocks along with it's bigger brother 12ga , again 18.25 threaded with full choke and survivor stock. Gonna be hard to choose come next turkey season. Been thinking of throwing a reddot on the 20 also.

can i ask who and how much also what thread as in mossburg or ? choke tubes fit your guns i just got a old ap framed topper 58 12gauge and would love to chop it off n have it threaded but no one around here SW PA. does it i called around they all do rifles but no shotguns

The barrels have tru-choke tubes on them. I picked up the 20GA on the dreaded ebay, but I had to do it seeing that it was only $80 with $5 shipping. I contacted the seller and he agreed to do my 12GA for $60 which included the tube, threading and return shipment. I couldn't say no to that either. He also reinstalled the bead. I haven't seen anymore on ebay from him in awhile. He goes by the seller name ht and he's good in my book. Wouldn't surprise me if he's around this forum somewhere.

I bought the reamer and tap from brownells and intall my own. I use the mossberg/browning/H&R pattern chokes. Has worked very well. So far I have done 8 barrels for friends and family. My favorite is a 28 inch vent rib that came with the mossberg 500. I cut it down to 20" fitted bolt on sights to the vent rib tapped for the choke tubes and lengthened the forcing cone. with the extended choke tube she's 211/2 inch, nice and short but stil had the range. you can buy one from the factory but they are almost 200.00! with so many in the family tools were cheaper!
