Summer 2012 Shoot in South Dakota

Got the vacation plans all settled this weekend. I will be heading out this summer to do 2 to 3 days of PD shooting. Even the wife wants to go this time.  :)
 
This is turning in to a family affair as my Dad and his girlfriend, my aunt and uncle and one of my cousins will all be making the trip.
 
I plan on taking my .17HMR handi, .223 Rem Handi, and my 7.62x54R Mosin. I may use this as an excuse to add a 22 LR or 22-250 or even a 25-06 to the family!  ;D 
 
I was even toying with the idea of putting a MB on 500 S&W and bringing it out to see if I can really get out to 300 yards with that beast. I got the Nikon XLR 300 for it, but holy cow is that a thumper. Imagine one of those rounds taking out a PD!  :o

Suggest you verify dogs are available where you're going.  I just received my deposit back on a hunt because of plague killing off a lot of dog towns around the Pine Ridge area.

Our neighbor just got back from South Dakota PD hunt. He pretty much said the same thing, but, Rumor Alert!, he suspects that the dog towns were being systematically poisoned by some members of the agricultural community. He thinks the reason behind it was that area had a great year for rain and thus vegetation last year and they were worried that the PD population would explode with abundace of food. He also said this is not the first time he has seen a "plauge" like malady strikes seemingly healthy PD populations. I honestly don't know what to really think about that theory.
 
Stinks for the peopole who planned their vacations one way or the other.

A 22 LR would be a very good choice , not sure the 25/06 would be much help though , I took mine to Ok one year and never shot it , just tooo much gun for P-dogs , even the 243 was at the top end for most shooting . However I did use my 45/70 with some success , just hits the mound like an air strike !  ;D

The 243 is a real good choise and with the heaver bullets hold up in a wind real good plus give great hits and is good for long range. The 25-06 is also a good choise for the same reason but it will be hard on the should if used alot. The 223 is a real good choise for mid range and again with the right bullets give great hits. The 22-250 is my favorite but in a wind it may want to drift unless you are use to the wind. The 17 HMR is only good for the short haul so is the 22 lr. I personly would leave both at home. I won't even talk about a 45-70 on a dog town.

Don't cut either one of these rounds short , on a calm day or out of the wind the lowly 22 LR is a 100 + yard gun and the 17 HMR out to over 150 yards .
 
The key to P-dogs is rounds down range , and given the choice , I'll take the recoil of a RF or mid level 22 CF any day over a big kicker .

We went last year in September for a 3 day shoot. First 2 days were windy and very cool. 20-30 mph winds in the upper 50's. I stuck with my 223 and 7.62x54R (very customized) for those 2 days. The other guys brought out the 308s. We did not even pull out the .17 or 22 lr until the third day when it was sunny and calm. We racked up more confirmed kills using the .17s and 22s than we did with the 223 and 30 cal. We confirmed our kill by walking the grounds with a laser range finder to the carcas and recorded the range back to the table.
 
I had one confirmed kill with a 22lr from my Dads Savage at 239 yards. Granted we were sitting a knoll and shooting down into somewhat of a small shallow valley. I was impressed with what that 22 round did to the prarie dog at the range. It was standing on is hind legs and when I hit it and the round still went completely through the midsection of its torso. Also granted this was the exception to most of the kills. Alomost all came between 75 and 150 yards wth the 22s and 17s.
