Unique 44 Mag
« on: May 15, 2012, 11:07:00 AM »
I am about to begin loading some 200 grain Laser Cast lead bullets for a 44 mag Ruger Super Blackhawk using Unique powder. All of the load data I've found produce higher velocity than I would care to have.I was just wondering what the low end would be for a powder charge of Unique. All I''m looking for is a low recoil paper puncher. Thanks, Forcon.

You could get some 44 special brass and go that route.

I used to shoot a lot of 44s with 8gr. Unique. Not sure how fast they were going but they were easy to handle.

I've used Magnum brass with Special load data for some light shooting loads. Normally the higher end Special loads in Magnum brass worked for me. For light loads today I've been using Trail Boss; 6-7 grains under a 240 gr lead bullet.

The data you're seeing is probably for jacketed bullets, which can only go so slow before the bullets stick in the barrel. Lyman has a ton of loading data for cast bullets, as does RCBS, but you won't find it on line, you need to buy the books, which are relatively inexpensive. For that matter, Speer & Hornady have loading data for their swaged bullets which will work too.

For that matter, Laser Cast publishes a pretty useful manual too.
