New girl in the house.
« on: May 15, 2012, 04:56:19 PM »
Picked this up at a pawn shop today, and while I know she ain't nothin special, I thought she was too pretty to be sitting on a shelf.

It's apparent that it has been refinished and the irons were removed, reciever drilled and tapped. I mounted the Redfield on it even though I'm not sure I'll ever shoot her, afraid I may be disappointed. But the bore is bright and shiny with strong rifling. This is my first 98 and I like the way she looks.

Ooops, that is an important nugget to forget huh? It's an 8MM. What kind of recoil can I expect? My shoulders are in pretty rough shape(both rotator cuffs torn) and don't want to be seen crying in public ;D

If I'm shooting jacketed in the Yugo 24/47, I'll wear a recoil pad.  I've found as I've gotten old(er) that the recoil bothers me some.

Very nice rifle. It may be my 62 year old eyes or the photo, but that scope looks cocked foward. maybe the front ring belongs in the rear ??????

Had a smith look it over today to make sure she was in good working order and he gave me thumbs up. Also, I learned that it is not a K98, it's an M48 from Yugoslavia. That's ok by me, like I said, I just thought it looked good, so I bought it. Bought some surplus ammo to run through it, I should be able to re-use the brass right? I can get pictures of the ammo if need be.

A lot of the surplus 8mm Mauser is berdan primed and albeit not impossible to reload it's tough.  Might be better off to get some Wolf Gold or S&B (Sellier & Belliot) for some nice reloadable brass that's boxer primed.  If you want to get an idea how hard it is to use berdan primed brass, do a search on YouTube and you'll see really quick that it's not worth it.  ;)
