Really stupid question, but...
« on: May 17, 2012, 04:56:48 AM »
Bear with me here.  ::)

Can you safely fire a 22lr cartridge in a 22 mag rifle? By safely I mean to the firearm.

It would seem to me you could... You can do a 22 short in a firemarm chambered in 22 lr so why not a 22 lr in a firearm chambered 22 mag?

I know accuracy would be an issue, but why would it not work?

Ok stop laughing... Just wondering.

It will fire, but the 22mag chamber is bigger in diameter than the shorter 22 rounds, you risk bursting the case and high pressure gas coming back at ya.

Short and sweet then, No.

Back to the drawing board on that idea.

The case will split, we used to shoot the rat shot LR 22's in a high standard 22 mag derringer, this was way before they started making those pretty snake loads they have now.Never had any problem, the case would split, we had to pry the case out with a pocket knife. Not the best practice in the world, but hunting in the everglades confrontations with water moccasins were a daily occurance.

I shot some .22 lrs in my sportster mag and while it fired fine, the rim hung up on the ejector and got stuck going in and coming out.  If I would have tried to just close it like I do with the mags I would have had a nasty accident.  So you can, if careful, but I wont again.

My brother-n-law had a 22 mag lever action that I used to do some squirrel hunting some 30 plus years ago. The thing was, I thought it was a regular 22 LR rifle. I shot it once and the shell casing got stuck in the barrel, so I took it back to my P.O. BIL. The use of a pair of needle nose pliers and all was fixed. Lesson learned.....

Will it shoot ? sure
Is it safe ? maybe in some guns not in most others some may say . But every time the case splits isn't the chamber getting burnt deposits line the ones where you get when shooting a short round in a chamber made to also accept longer rounds ? If that is the case is it really good for the gun ? I would think not.

One of the gun shops I worked in I saw a large number of people bringing in their 22 mags with a stuck case. Would pull the case out and point out the marking on the bbl it was a 22 mag not 22 LR. What is the diffrence they would ask and would go ahead and explain for the 50th time or so.

Just for clairfacation, is'nt the .22LR .223 dia and the .22 mag .224 dia? As I recall, older .22 Hornets where also .223 while the newer ones are .224.

I have it on good report that those new 22WRF rounds chamber and shoot very well in a certain Marlin 22 Mag that wouldnt group with maggies worth beans. I believe it is a Micro-Groove barrel.

It's not so much the size of the bullet, it's the size of the case.  .22 Mag has a bigger case, larger around than the .22LR.  Some .22s will shoot .22 Shorts, Longs, and Long Rifle cartridges.  Guns like single shots, pumps, and some lever actions.  It will be stamped on the barrel, S,L,LR.  .22 Mag is designed only to shoot .22 Mag ammo only.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

mca adapters makes one that will allow you to do it.  $20 for 3 of them (the mag case is fatter).  there is a way to make one out of a spent mag case, i can explain it if you would like, but there are quite a few steps.  you will need a way to remove it if you are planning to use it extensively (it eventually fails to eject after stretching/fouling).  i am guessing that the adapter will behave the same way.  i have not done any extensive acuracy testing but i can hit a spent 20 guage shell at 25 yards offhand.

Right on the mark!!  The bullet diameters are close enough to work in either barrel.  The .22 LR uses a heeled bullet, that is it has a reduced diameter that fits into the case mouth.  So the outside diameter of the bullet and case are the same (plus or minus tolerances).  The .22 Magnum (rimfire) uses a full diameter bullet that fits into the case like a centerfire cartridge does.  So the case and there fore chamber of the Magnum is not only longer, but has a greater diameter also.

So safe to the gun. no, can you get away with shooting the LR in a Magnum chamber a few times? Sure.
