AR help.
« on: May 17, 2012, 03:55:11 PM »
I have  posted on the cannon and motor section but this the first time in the AR AK section .  I am in the middle of doing some trading for a Smith and Wesson AR15  mp 15  model in 223 Cal .My question is can I change out the upper section to a 22 long ? I am thinking In 22 long I can shoot all day long at a fraction of the cost 223 .  I have never owned an Ar I know very little about Ar's thanks for any help.

As far as I know, there is nothing proprietary about the S&W's that would prevent you from installing an upper in 22LR, or purchasing one of the conversion units that will allow you to fire 22LR's in the S&W as it is.  If you decide to purchase a complete upper, keep in mind that you get what you pay for, so stay away from some of the cheap imported uppers.
The only thing you can't do is purchase on of the dedicated 22LR rifles and later add a centerfire upper - they will only shoot 22LR's becaure they are designed to fire 22LR's only.

I just went with the conversion. I think it was spikes tactical brand, but this cmmg is identical. http://www.fedtacticaldirect.com/CMMG-Inc-ARC-22-SS-Convert-Kit-3-26rd-Mgz-22BA651_p_32112.html

Yes you can put a .22 LR upper on your S&W lower. The .22 LT upper, with the special .22 LR magazine will allow you to shoot .22 LR rimfire ammo from your AR....<><....:)
