I Hate Snakes
« on: May 18, 2012, 01:42:55 PM »
I took my Boxer for a walk a few minutes ago. He stepped off the driveway into the grass and suddenly growled and jumped back. I looked and there coiled up and ready to strike was a large Copperhead. Well Mr. Copperhead got a quick introduction to Mr. 9mm! Tossed what was left of him in my burning barrel. A caution, to those that don't know, be very careful when you kill a venemous snake and don't pick it up in your hand. Use a stick or something. Dead snakes can still bite, and inject venom, long after they are killed. Not an old wive's tale but a very real fact. Has something to do with the nerves and muscles in their bodies. My Boxer was lucky and he didn't get bit. He should behave better as he owes me. Of course he'd tell you that he saved me by warning me the snake was there. Another word of advice, never believe what a Boxer tells ya unless he yells SNAKE! ;) ROFL

Just last week, I was climbing up a steep embankment from a stream I was fishing. As I got to the top, I encountered a northern watersnake. It struck at my head missing my nose by a few inches. I know my heart is still good because I didn't have a heart attack. I'll be carrying my .22 with bird shot from now on.

Copperheads are quite camouflaged in the fall of the year with all the different color of leaves on the ground. My daddy many years ago had driven down to Many, Louisiana to go squirrel hunting. he got out of his car slipped on his hunting jacket grabbed his gun and headed into the woods. He had not gone very far into the woods when he spied a copperhead on the trail he was on, so in order not to scare the squirrels he looked around for a stick to kill the snake. Well he spotted a stick and went to pick it up and there lay another copperhead! Well to heck with sticks he shot that one and took a few steps and shot the first snake. He decided to take a different trail and bing! There was a copperhead in a small bush on the trail , well bam! And he turned and headed back to his car and that was the end of squirrel hunting for that day!!

I grew up in Tennessee with Copperheads and Rattlers everywhere.  I now live in the only state that does not have snakes.  Don't need to worry about snakes when wading through tall grass or brush.

The above are Mojave rattlers. They taste way better than other species I've eaten. Boiled, deboned and sauteed in butter, onion and garlic they're a close match for crab meat. Also a "Deadliest Catch" seeing as how their venom is 10x more potent than most other rattlesnake species.

SH you ought to be ashamed thinkin that boxer would lie.  They never lie.  They may expand on the truth once in a while, but would never outright lie.  It's a wonder more of them aren't members here.   ;) ::) ;D

Stepped into my garage preparing to leave one morning, pushed the button to open the garage door to expose a big skunk wanting to waddle right into my house.  Quick draw, bang, and trouble avoided.  Always carry at home!  You never know who or what may want to cause you a bad day no matter where you are.

We have very few snakes of any kind around here due to long, cold winters, short, dry summers and very little ground cover but a few years back my Shorthair/Brittany did find a rattler. He did have the "pre-bite" shot and that no doubt saved his life but he was a very sick puppy for a few days and it took a full month before all the swelling had gone down.

:)  Howdy! Where I live in Texas snakes are out by March 1st until about the 1st day of Winter. Snakes are out during Deer Archery Season and Spring Turkey Season.  You sure have to be careful! During the warmer months I pack a shotgun with me everytime I go past the front yard. And sometimes snakes are in the front and back yard. Always, Gene

I take a live and let live position with snakes, even rattlesnakes, unless I find one around the house or barns. Then I'll get a hoe and take care of him. Out in the toolies I'll just walk around one. He can go his way and I'll go mine.

I really like snakes, except those that strike at my face. That's over the line as far as I'm concerned.

Out in the woods I'll simply avoid a snake and let it go it's way. However, my yard is off limits to any and all venemous snakes. I have grandchildren and pets that I care more about than any snake. Also, my problem is this, you might be lucky to see and avoid a poisenous snake once but you might not see it the next time till you or someone else gets bit. Face it, I don't care who you are crap happens. How would you feel if you let one in your yard pass and later down the line it bit a pet or loved one? In my book that's not the snakes fault it's your's. The snakes aren't as kind hearted as those who claim they're no danger. The snakes don't care who they bite and yes that includes you who think they are Disney charectors.

Black snakes and King snakes are welcome around my place anytime.  They help control the rodent population.  But Copperheads are definitely not welcome in the yard.

Last Saturday the wife and I saw a couple of big Cottonmouths sunning themselves on a dock while out for a morning paddle in our canoe.  They looked to be about 4' long and about as big around as my wrist.   Needless to say we kept to a respectable distance.

When living in New Mexico, I killed every Rattler I found.  Took it home and skinned it.  The wife then cooked it up, she loves Rattlesnake.

When I se a snake I consider it a King Cobra until I can kill it and THEN examine it.
Most of the time I just kill it and dispose of it to keep it away from the grandkids and pets.
I love dead snakes.

A few years ago my Sister's dog was killed by a rattlesnake. He was bitten twice on the face. Vet said it was one of very few dogs he'd lost to snakebite. Most survive.

Sis has another dog now, also bitten on the face recently. As a result, she has an area on her rear upper lip that no longer covers the teeth.

Fortunately in CA, none of our rattlesnake species are protected and can be taken with no limit, at any time, by any means, and without a fishing licence (other reptiles require a fishing licence and taking them is highly regulated). Only places they can't be taken from is state parks, game preserves, etc.

My Son and I will be out in the desert tomorrow night. Hope to bring home a few big ones to make us up a nice pot of "snili" (snake chili).  :)

I like snakes although if I saw a venomous one around the house I would try to relocate it for my pups' safety. I'm one of the people who stop to help turtles and snakes across the road if it is in a safe place for me to stop. ;D

I find them interesting.  I've killed a bunch, let some live, Pickedup and played with a few.  Don't care for the poisonous ones.  Got into a lot of trouble over a sidewinder, during a training exercise while in the AF.  Learned it's not nice to sling a sidewinder into the Recreation Tent to create a disturbance.  It did, we took the camp, but I got a chewing from the Commander, when the man hit by the snake had to be taken to the Hospital.

I had just cut the head off the sidewinder, so the muscles were still active.  When I threw it into the tent, it hit a Msgt in the neck.  The body wrapped around the man's neck.  This Msgt went to screaming and clawing at his throat.  Ripped the skin up pretty bad trying to get the snake of his neck.  Once he got it off and threw it across the tent, he passed out.  The medics took him to the hospital, thinking he had a heart attack.  Hence my trip to see the Commander.  He told me we had to get these men ready for Viet Nam, but in the future we did it without snakes.

My thoughts on snakes are kind of like this guy in this supposed Vietnam story.

A platoon was on foot patrol. The point man was terrified of snakes. A snake crossed the path in front of him and he unloaded his M-16 on it. Well his Sgt. was not too pleased that their position had just been given away due to the gunfire. He got in the soldiers face and asked him if there could not have been a better way to deal with the snake. Without missing a beat the soldier replied, " I didn't think there was enough time to call in an airstrike."

The first two rounds in any gun I carry is rat shot for that very reason. The only good snake is a DEAD snake. Hate them darn things! This time of year I usually find three or more in my chicken house eating eggs and this year is no exception.

What is it about snakes?  I don’t bother the non-poisonous ones at all and when I find a copperhead or rattler I carefully pick them up and walk them down into the woods where I let them go.  Just about every fall I find a copperhead trying to get into my house, I just relocate them alive.

I don't understand why people are afraid of snakes.  I never kill one and I wish others wouldn't.

I kill all poisionous snakes near my home because children play there and one entered my dog pen and bit my dog. I don't care to have them close. In the wild I don't bother the ones that don't bother me. I'm not afraid of the snake but what it may do if not seen.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !
