What is it about snakes?

The venomous ones, when in a populated area, are a hazard.  I'm certainly not going to walk one down the road and have it come back and bite me, my family or pets.  The non-venomous are welcome.  They eat mice, rats, and as noted above, some even eat the venomous snakes.

Mostly superstitious nonsense based on a misunderstanding of the scripture.

Snakes were well liked until they lost their legs.

My thoughts on snakes are kind of like this guy in this supposed Vietnam story.

A platoon was on foot patrol. The point man was terrified of snakes. A snake crossed the path in front of him and he unloaded his M-16 on it. Well his Sgt. was not too pleased that their position had just been given away due to the gunfire. He got in the soldiers face and asked him if there could not have been a better way to deal with the snake. Without missing a beat the soldier replied, " I didn't think there was enough time to call in an airstrike."

Swamp if you are that fond of snakes we could all just catch the Copperheads and send them to you so you can release them in your yard. Then we all could be happy, happy, happy!  :)

I actually do catch snakes and release them in my yard.

Tell you what. If you can convince me that Rattlesnakes and Copperheads can tell the diferance between a child playing and a real threat I might be more lenient on them. Till then I remove threats from my yard, not introduce them.

We have very few snakes of any kind around here due to long, cold winters, short, dry summers and very little ground cover but a few years back my Shorthair/Brittany did find a rattler. He did have the "pre-bite" shot and that no doubt saved his life but he was a very sick puppy for a few days and it took a full month before all the swelling had gone down.

A few years ago my Sister's dog was killed by a rattlesnake. He was bitten twice on the face. Vet said it was one of very few dogs he'd lost to snakebite. Most survive.

Sis has another dog now, also bitten on the face recently. As a result, she has an area on her rear upper lip that no longer covers the teeth.

Fortunately in CA, none of our rattlesnake species are protected and can be taken with no limit, at any time, by any means, and without a fishing licence (other reptiles require a fishing licence and taking them is highly regulated). Only places they can't be taken from is state parks, game preserves, etc.

My Son and I will be out in the desert tomorrow night. Hope to bring home a few big ones to make us up a nice pot of "snili" (snake chili).  :)
********************
I've seen a real mix of colors in California that I haven't seen else where. Mostly in the younger ones (they didn't usually didn't make it to maturity around me). They're almost...pretty. Still cook em and eat em though.

Just remember nearly everyone bitten by snakes in this country gets bit trying to kill them.  There is some justice I suppose.

Of the people I know that got bit 5 , none were trying to catch the snake. I have been struck at by 2 snakes and didn't know the snake was near until it almost got me. So if I feel your stats are wrong please forgive me , my experince does not support it.

How about a true 7 foot 3 inch long eastern diamondback rattlesnake found near St. Augustine, FL in September 2009.

I have had too many close encounters with venomous snakes to give them a chance! Especially cottonmouths! I find them in alot of cases to be very aggressive snakes. Around the property I gladly like to see king snakes, blue racers, garter snakes, and hognose snakes , they are my buddies. I have actually witness a king snake take on a bigger rattler and kill it and eat it!Talk about a fast and furious battle, the rattler did not have a chance once the king got it coils around the rattler!!

Very few have ever seen a cotton mouth since their range is very very limited.

Not sure where you came up with that.  Their range is rather extensive, encompassing most of the south.

Thanks Kimber.  I can also add to that by noting that I have seen several in Eastern KY as well.  I was close enough to see them flash the open white mouth (from which they get the name cottonmouth).  The common water snake (that is sometimes confused for the cottonmouth) does not have this characteristic.

We definitely have our share of them here in southern Missouri. A few years back I had a close call with one. I had just crossed a creek and as I stepped over a log it felt like I got punched hard on my right hip. I know, my mistake, I should have walked around the log rather than step over it.  Anyhow, looking down there was a Cotton Mouth coiled and ready to strike again. I quickly killed it as I didn't have much choice. It is amazing how hard they hit you.  I just knew I was in deep trouble as I was alone and miles from home and have serious heart problems. I pulled my jeans down and there on my hip was a fist sized bruise already forming. I was puzzled because there were no fang holes to be seen. Then I realised what saved me. I had my keys and a pocket full of change which blocked the bite. I haven't seen near as many Cotton Mouths as I have Copperheads and Rattlers but they are definetly here. Several years ago a young man of 21 years was walking along a lake on the edge of St. Louis. Somehow he fell in the water. Right into a mass of Cotton Mouths. Don't know if it was a nest or what but the news report stated he was covered with bites. As you might expect he was dead when they found him.

Myth; I challenge anyone to produce a verified example of the dreaded "nest of cottonmouths".

Now I have seen what could be termed "nests" of snakes... and then them damned cottonmouths be so nasty I can imagine they'd only put up with a mess a they own kind...   ;D

also consider that cotton mouths cannot strike under water, and are severely slowed while swimming.  At the waters edge, perhaps, but not in the water.

My daddy back in his younger days on the farm at lunch time would leave the work in the field and he and his cousin would take their fish/frog gigs and go down on the branch to gig frogs and fish! One trip they encountered a ball of cottonmouths and managed to kill almost all of them!
He also said onetime they were going swimming in one of the private ponds and about 5or 6 guys were racing to the pond to see who would get in first. Well the the guy that won hit the water and came up yelling with several moccassin`s on him. He died shortly thereafter.
As far as snakes not being able to bite in water, I don`t know if I buy into that. I know sea snakes can certainly do it!
Also I have seen cottonmouths swim up close while I was skinning squirrels by a creek and the snakes would grab small perch or minnows!
In the late fall in N.W. Louisiana and E.Texas I have been walking down creek beds that were almost dried up  hunting squirrels and spot cottonmouths alongside the creekbed which were lethargic due to the cold temperature. You could be way out of their strike zone but they would still make a feeble effort to strike in your general direction if they could sense any heat or movement.
One of my cousin used to catch cottonmouths and milk them and sell the venom!
I used to watch him do that, and some of those snakes were pretty good size snakes.
