I sent my Remington black/synthetic stock to  www.bellandcarlson.com , the synthetic stock folks,  for a hydroscopic camo dip by their Special Effects department. (I chose REAL TREE )

Bell & Carlson seems to have since discontinued their stock-dipping service, but if you google "camo stock dipping", several companies currently offering the service will pop up.

From B&C, I had it back in 4 weeks, and have had it out in rough/tumble hunting for over 4 years w/o any stock finish issues.

I haven't painted as stock with it but 'Fusion' is paint made for plastics and is widely available. I have used it for several projects around the house.

I've painted a few stocks with Fusion paint and they came out pretty good but it has not been that long, so as far as durability goes not sure yet.

well i have been reading up on the idea of painting my stock.
here is what i came up with so far, painting the stock has problems, primarily it will wear off .  some paints will last longer then others , but the bottom line is,  paint is a coating and it will come off.
what i found is vinyl and plastics dye.  it comes in a aerosol can, and can be found in automotive and body shop supply stores. it works like spray paint but bonds to the material, not top coat it.
im going to read up and see if   it will hurt the stocks in any way.. but i think im going this route.

Among other things I've painted two stocks with Fusion. I had to redo both. I wear sunscreen. The Fusion melted where my cheek and hands touched the stocks. Other than that I've had good luck with it on four wheeler plastic and some outside plastic parts on my camp trailer.

I don't know if all sunscreens will do this but Coppertone Baby Magic SPF 50 (no smart cracks now  ;D ) and Banana Boat Sport SPF 50 will get it in a hurry so be warned.

I've painted a few with Fusion paint. I then put about 4-5 coats of their clear coat, usually matte. Seems to
protect finish a bit more.

Of the two one was colored and the other was clear coated. The sunscreen got both of them. They looked good until one trip to the range and that was all it took.

if sunscreen hurts the fusion paint, then gun oil is sure going to ruin it .
oldandslow i dont know what your doing that you need sunscreen thats nuclear bomb proof , ::) but if the paint cant hold up then i dont want it on my stock. and its sounds like the clear isnt any better.
a guy near me can dip the stock.. for $80 . then who knows how that will hold up either

Scibaer, I live in NM. This state leads the nation in skin cancer by percentage of population. I've had over 100 pre-cancers removed. My wife has had both basal cell carcinoma and squemous cell cancer. Had a life long friend die a few years ago from basal cell carcinoma that started as skin cancer on his left arm. I'm not taking any chances.  ;D

On a side note I have a Remington shotgun that is camo dipped and it hasn't had any problem with my sunscreen. In fact the fusion paint is the only thing that I've had problems with from getting against my super duty sunscreen.

oldandslow,
about two years ago i was planning on moving, you and i had a few talks ( pm's) about nm. it was one of my top picks. you gave me some inside info on life there. so i knew you were from nm , but i didnt know about the cancers. so if i stepped on your toes , i appologize. no harm meant.

as for my move, i spent a year, drove all over, 35 states in total. racked up over 100,000 miles. i came back to michigan at the begining of this year.

about the stock.. ive been reading and learning. short story: dipping is good, but i still have a plastic feeling and sounding stock. dyes will weaken the plastic ( remmy's unknown plastic material ), paint or any top coating can wear, chip or peal  and usually does at some point.
so , i'm going to keep my stock as is and save up for a nice lam stock from boyds.
side note.. durakote chips if done right, and peels off if done wrong.. i.e.: good for metal, not so much for plastics.

I don't have a clue but you might call Brownell's and ask they sell paints and coating for such.

Sciaber, you didn't step on my toes so no apology needed. I just thought I'd explain why I'm serious about sunscreen. It also keeps my old, scaly skin soft too.  ;D

I think getting rid of the plastic stock is a smart move. I have one rifle with a plastic stock and a grandson shoots it so it doesn't bother me, otherwise I would replace it.
