Hold My Beer and Watch This
« on: May 20, 2012, 10:46:50 AM »
Famous last words. A conversation my wife and I had today got me thinking about a time almost 20 years ago when this was the case. I had been to a gunshow and bought the most audacious handgun I had ever seen. It was a stainless steel derringer, don't remember the brand but it was an Alaskan Survival model. Top barrel was a 45LC/410 and the bottom was a 45-70. Now the top barrel was a lot of fun but the bottom was another story. I took it to the hunting club and showed it to five or so of the guys. Then I decided to shoot the 45-70 barrel after several cold beers and some prodding from my friends. I had purchased some Remington 405 gr trapdoor loads as they were the mildest I could find. Still when I touched it off, I hit the target from about 10 yards but the part of the derringer behind the trigger had really scobbed up my middle knuckle. Not to be outdone my best friend said " if you can do it so can I, hold my beer". So it went until all there had to "prove their manhood" and shoot the gun. After all the "hold my beers" we all had the skin knocked off our middle knuckle on our right hand.

Kind of like boys testing the top wire of the electric cattle fence by throwing one leg over and tippy toeing trying to get the other leg on the same side BEFORE the next jolt!

That's sorta like learning that matches can burn twice. I think I was in 4th grade when my older brother taught me that. Yep, not funny from my standpoint.

I had an old Daisy BB-gun that had such little power that I could see the bb travel though the air and hit a piece of gravel on the driveway and bounce off the rock 20 ft. away. I got it into my head that if the bb bounced off the rock that it would be OK to put the muzzle on my boots where my big toe was. Yep, it had more power than I thought it did. Didn't go through the leather; but, my toe sure hurt.

Anyone want to hold my beer?

I recently saw one of those listed somewhere,I think it was made by american derringer and all I thought was that the 45-70 was to shoot yourself just before the grizzly was going to chomp on your head.

I was once dumb enough to pour water from a GI canteen on an electric fence, cousin said it was hot and needed cooling down. I was VERY youg and my cousin was a very naughty boy. I never trusted him after that. POWDERMAN.  ;) ;)

Speaking of electric fencers when I was 10-12 we got done milking and my father and I went over to the tool barn and on the bench was a fencer,he told me to tighten up the 2 wingnuts on the back and hold them a second,he plugged it in a second and said yup it still works. I think I left the floor and never said a word afterwards. With laws today he would have been had. To me it was just another day on the farm.

Speaking of electric fences...did ya'll know those hook eyelets on your boots will snag that wire and not let it go....?  For a long time?  Did you know that the fence hits you in surges, and will surge just as you almost get the wire loose?

That reminds me of a dumb thing I did when I was young I had an old CVA Hawken rifle I made from a kit back in the 70s and this old guy told me that you could fill the barrel full of black black powder and it wouldn't hurt it because it burns slow well one day my ex brother in law and I went to woods to shoot and I didn't fill the barrel but I put about one quarter full with round ball fired the gun it was a bright sunny day and it shot a bright flame about 50yards and blew the hammer back and the spent primmer blew over my head, I did it a few more times then my brother in law said let me try it and I even lowered the charge for him but he held it at his hip and when the primer blew off it sliced his face a little, And then the cops showed up thinking we were shooting a cannon or something and we were a good five miles from anywhere lol. It didn't hurt the gun any I kept it until 2000 But the Moral of the story is I'm glad I'm not young and dumb anymore.

picture this.. an old ski-doo from the 70's and a water sking trainer ( over sized skis connected together in the middle with handles like soemthing from a 60's era chopper ).. 20 feet of rope and a ice and snow covered neighborhood road..  ::)

no adult supervision, plenty of fuel and plenty of young teenage fools ready to take turns seeing how far they could ride the trainer.
not a single broken neck, how i will never know , some of us still have a scar or two though

Try a 400cc Yamaha with 40' of hemp rope and a scateboard , those little suckers do run up to about 40 mph before the bearings seas up and the wheels lock tight .

My little brother still carries the scar on his chin ,and the best part is coming into the house for mom to patch him up and her saying clean up the blood on your way back outside !!  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

One day a group of us wanted to go deep sea fishing and for some reason we couldn't.
So we grabbed a bunch of beer and went to my friends pool and grabbed an old 125 Pound rod and a portable fighting chair.
We set up the chair atthe shallow end and put on a belt with the snap schackle on the belt and tried timing our selves in how fast we could reel each other across the pool.  The "fish" trying to put up a fight.  It started as you yanked the "fish" off the diving board.
Well I was tugging and reeling and the line broke as I was tugging and the triangle shaped line guide made a nice hole in my head.
So Dad and Step Mom met me at the hospital to watch me get stitches and dad just shook his head and said I hope beer was involved cause you can not be that stupid normally.
I have an L shaped scar in the top of my head.

Well I had a 357 mag, 44 mag and a 45/410 derringer and shot all three , most friends didn't shot it but one time though.

I think there are more holding the beer and watching than goint to the hospital  ;)

I remember one time I was trying to sight in a 50-140 sharps at full power, I was by myself, but decided a couple shots of brandy was needed to keep myself calm and collected after a few rounds.  I'm not sure if it helped, but I got some good groups...and was not as afraid to pull the trigger.  ;D  But your right...usually drinking and firearms are not good together...I totally agree.  45-70 out of a derringer?  OK...give me a drink... ;) Since shooting that round out of a derringer makes no sense to me at all...I guess a drink goes along with it.

I know a guy still in prison for killing his best friend. They were drunk and tossing beer cans and trying to shoot them. Bunch of drunks involved, Jack tossed the can and stepped right in frot of the shooter. 12 ga to back of head at 6-7 ft, wasn't pretty. POWDERMAN.  :( :(
