Issue with one of my 870's
« on: May 21, 2012, 06:38:01 AM »
My 870 express supermag(3-1/2") is beating up the shotshell brass. All my turkey loads that have been cycled through the gun have creases in the brass. Also, it sometimes jams with the 3-1/2's. The spent shells come out but the next in line jams between being brought out of the tube and into the chamber.

Any ideas and do you think the two issues are related?  Thanks for your time.

You say creases in the brass...where are they located? under the extractor? at the rear where the lifter stops the shell motion?? The jamming issue sounds like the shell isn't clearing the shell stop at the magazine terminnus. It isn't getting all the way onto the carrier. This could be a lot of things. Is this an older gun? Has it been worked on? Will live rounds cycle through the action? Burrs on the lifter table? Do other length rounds function better? The 3 1/2 inch shell is a tight fit and this may be a timing issue.. Does the problem occur when the action is cycled quickly and slowly?? It may be a weak magazine spring that's not throwing the next round far enough onto the carrier.. Vigously working the action should help with this issue..

I would disasemble the gun (pull the bolt, trigger assembly, and magazine spring & follower and give it a good cleaning. The properly lube it and reasemble it and check if you still have the proble. By the looks of your shells it would seem to be a timing problem. If it still happens I'd replace the magazine spring.

Check where the barrel butts up against the inside of the receiver. Have one used that was shot without the mag not being screwed in tight. This raised metal from the barrel slamming into the cutout in the receiver. I stoned down the burrs and function was restored. Frank

It's almost certainly a timing issue.. The lifter is slamming the shell from the magazine into the bolt??? Does it do the same thing with shorter shells? To see if the new mag spring will help see if the problem occurs with shells remaining in the mag (enhanced spring tension).. Also check the lifter to be certain its straight and not twisted.. Was this a used gun??

No it was brand new. Should I replace the mag spring with a factory one or is there an aftermarket that might be better? I don't know if this occurs with shorter shells. This is primarily a turkey gun and it patterns so well with the 3-1/2's that I haven't tried anything else since I first bought the gun. I can try some after turkey season

Also, I originally bought it as a goose gun and put the duck plug in it. I never took it out since I have never felt the need for more than 3 shots for turkey. Will removing it help?

I would remove the magazine plug and check if the problem is resolved. While you have the end cap off of the magazine I would pull the spring and follower and clean the magazine tube out. Check the follower for freedom of movement.

Cleaning the mag tube is a great idea but run some shorter shells thru it to check where in the cycle the damage is occcuring. .. I would check the lifter for burrs that could be short stopping the shell coming from the mag.. Also be sure to clean and lube the fire control.. and the inside of the receiver..

No it was brand new.
Then, I'd contact Remington and let them fix it for free.

It appears to me the timing is off and these guns have a lot off issues..Send it back and let big green solve the problem as its likely they created it..
