Life expectancy of a Model 97?
« on: May 21, 2012, 03:21:25 PM »
How long we talking before parts need to be replaced for moderate (45LC) loads? Things to look for in the used market if it's made aware the round count is less than 2,000?

Are you asking if parts need to be replaced after 2000 rounds?  If you are you can't be serious can you?

That's why i'm asking. I don't know if things tend to break or wear out. I have never ventured into FA territory or 45LC loads. I know they can be loaded hotter than non plus loads. Can the firing pin sustain the pressure?
I know FAs are built well, can handle 45LC pressures...Will they last for thousands of rounds, i'm sure.

It's just a question for experienced owners. Nothing to contribute, move on. Thanks

I will contribute this.
They are questions that first appear to not be legitimate and to me this looked like one.
Sorry to have upset you.  But it doesn't take much knowledge to know that for a FA revolver, even a M97, that 2000 rounds through one is nothing with anything approaching a half way decent load.
Even a Ruger New Vaquero with take the 45 Colt Keith load with good life and 2000 rounds is not even a break a sweat on amount.  It is a 6 shot cylinder.
Sorry to have ruined your day but it seemed like, to me, a screwy question because, like i stated, with just a limited amount of knowledge the answer would have already been know.
Again i am sorry.
Oh yes,  go the Buffalo Bore ammo site for the  45 Colt +P ammo and look at the 1200 fps 300 gr load they load for the M97.

Thanks for the information. That is what I am looking for, not the "are you serious?" stuff. I have read FA are tough and well built. I just wanted the honest answer that if someone was using potent loads, what the repercussions are in the long term and if it effects the life expectancy.
I'm not really grouchy guy :)

I would only add that while you are not going to wear out your throat or barrel in an insane amount of loads, springs do break.  I would order up the trigger return spring and a bolt spring, throw them in your parts bag, and then forget about it.
