Vintage Ammo Cache Discovered
« on: May 21, 2012, 04:24:04 PM »
A friend of mine came up to our place in VT this weekend and said he had something for me. He puts down this obviously very heavy case, pops it open and, voila! Treasure. It's mainly 30-30, 30-06 and 12ga (including some lead duck loads) with some .22 and a few boxes of .25 auto pistol and .380 thrown in. My friend recently bought a new house in MA and it had a massive pool table in the finished basement. While they were trying to move it, he discovered a secret panel holding this case of what I assume is late Sixties/early Seventies vintage ammo - $2.20 for a box of 12 ga target loads? No signs of water damage. I got a chuckle out of the packaging featuring the plastic hulls.

So, my question is should I just shoot it, or is there sufficient collector interest in ammo of this era to make it worthwhile selling?

RPRNY,
I'm not expert nor am I an ammo collector, but looking at some of the boxes in the photo, you have some very desireable items there.
Particularly the Sears ammo and the yellow box Winchester stuff.  Plus, all the boxes look to be in super nice condition which only adds
value to a collector.  I would get some expert advice before shooting any of it.  You may be shooting some highly prized items!!

Thanks. GBO has always been a great source of information for me. Hopefully someone will provide that expertise or direct me to where I might find it.

Anyone have enough experience that, based on what's pictured, you could suggest whether these are worth selling? The packaging is in great shape and the ammo has been dry and looks shootable. I learned a little about the 30-06 "Alpine" ammo. These were reloads of government brass using CCI primers, powder (not sure what make) sourced from/through Hodgdon, and Speer 150 gr bullets made by the American Ammunition Company of Denver Colorado. The rest are Winchester, Remnington and Sears (not sure who made their ammo).
