Dumb question
« on: May 21, 2012, 04:31:54 PM »
I bought a couple of boxes of cheap 20 gauge Remington loads that look like they have aluminum bases and used them to bust a few clay targets with my daughters. Are they aluminum? Are they reloadable?

Thanks for your insight.

Aluminum?  Don't know.  Reloadable?  YES!  I get better crimps and hull life out of those cheap Remingtons than i do the cheap Winchesters.  Some of the Winchester hulls split on the first firings.  Remingtons are holding up nicely.

I haven't seen aluminum ones, but with blazer and all the other aluminum cased ammo I've heard of, reloading is a no-go.  I haven't seen these shells, so not sure if they are aluminum or aluminized steel maybe.  Any pictures possible?

The cheap federal trap shells that they shoot at my club are viewed as unreloadable by the guys with the fancy high rail guns.  They just throw them in the trash can. The base does look like aluminum but I am not sure of that.

I wouldn't worry about the metal the base is made of. Most shotgun shells today have "brass" made of steel. Some have a brass wash, a few have a copper wash. They reload just as nice as the real brass shells.

A magnet will tell you if the bases are steel or not. Get Lymans shotshell loading book.

Thank you all for helpful suggestions. When my loader gets here, I guess I'll give them a try.

The ones with the "aluminum" bases are the Remington Gun Club brand. I just finished reloading a box of 20 gauge once fired ones about 10 minutes ago. They crimp perfect and they shoot fine. I get approximately 5 or 6 reloads out of them. Most guys at the skeet range throw them away which gives me an ample supply. I haven't bought a case of shotshells in years. The only thing you'll find is that the base eventually starts to split therefore the number of reloads are half of what you get from an sts.

Just be careful.  The reason aluminum cases aren't considered "reloadable" is that the aluminum can overexpand and leave the primer pocket loose.  In the wrong gun this can end up blowing a primer and associated gasses backwards into your bolt and receiver or worse.  I'd approach these with caution personally.  I know some tried reloading .45 acp Blazer ammo and ended up with gas cut slides and slides blown off their frame from it.  8(

Thanks Tacklebury...I received the loader yesterday and reloaded a couple of boxes today of brass bases and one round of the silver-looking bases. Will give them a try sometime in the next week...been raining for a couple of days now.

I really appreciate everyone sharing their knowledge.  :)

They are almost definitely not aluminum. They just look like aluminum. They are probably called Gun Club, SportLoad, Nitro or possibly Premier STS, and they are among the finest reloading hulls out there today.

I agree with rifleman with the exception of the sportload. The sportloads were not near as good as the other Remys, especially in 20 gauge 1 oz game loads.

The cheap Rem. cases are excellant cases. The metal on the case head is so thin that it really adds no streanth to the case, the plastic that is molded into it is really what does the work. When I was shooting trap I`ve loaded alot of the cheap Rem. cases 10 or 12 times. I shot light load and heave loads will shorten case life.
