What Jason said, the 378 Wby case head is .578", way too big at the pressure they run at, I tried a 300WSM(rechambered 308W) which has a smaller .555" case head and reduced pressures, couldn't equal 30-06 150gr velocities without too much action flex for any decent accuracy.

The Handi is factory chambered in 270 Win which has a SAAMI MAP of 65kpsi and a .470" case head, go to a bigger case head and the pressure needs to go down, the 500S&W is another factory chambering which has top loads of ~53kpsi and a .530"ish case head, that should give you an idea of what would work.

Here's a quote from a previous discussion that should help determine what may work and what likely won't.  ;)

Tim

Quote
Breech thrust on a break barrel (same as bolt thrust) can be calculated using a simple formula, use the external case head diameter for a ball park comparison, actual breech thrust is dependent on the internal case head area and the pressure. I use the hydraulic cylinder calculator since it uses the same formula, just add the cylinder diameter(case head diameter) and pressure in PSI, the other fields don't apply and aren't needed.

If a Handi could be chambered for Weatherby Cartridges, I would have done it years ago.  I shoot the .337/378 Weatherby quite a bit.  One step above the .338 Laupua Magnum cartridge the Army Snipers use.  Beautiful cartridge, reaches out and touches things, with enough authority to do the job at long ranges.  At $5.00 a round factory, $7.00 a round my handloads, doubt many people would want one.

Just buy a Remington 300 Ultra Mag and save money and be safe all the way around. Do some research the 300 super mags burn out barrels pretty quickly, if you shoot a lot.

Sure--just was considering the fastest .30 caliber available.

Is 30 Gibbs the most powerful round the .308Win bull barrel can be rechambered for?

Lame!  Thinking of just sticking with the .308 bull, which I'd really prefer not to do as the .308Win is pretty ho-hum.  Cheap to shoot, though!

My partner shoots a 30/378.  He likes the velocity he is getting.  Pretty fast, but I like the energy i am getting.

gendoc/j2:  When I was looking to get into long range shooting, I looked at the .338 Laupua Mag.  I found as AR-30, and was going to purchase it.  I procrastinated that evening, and when I went back the following day it was gone.  I looked else where and found a Weatherby Mark IV Accumark in .338/378.  A marine sniper friend who was home on leave, discussed scopes with me.  He advised me not to go higher than 15 power.  When you snuggle into the stock your heart beat will move your sites with every beat.  He is right, scope moves right then back left half as much then back on target.  He also recommended Night Force Scopes.  That is what he uses in the big sand box.  So that was the way I went.  Night Force 3.5-15X50 NFS.  Love it.  Dropped a Moose at 810 yards, one shot.  220gr Nosler Accubond

rog,  j2 says  (copy & pasted from his text message)

"very true about the heart beat, and the nf 50's are very nice and a great companion.
we have schmidt & bender 5-25x56 mk-II for all our distant targets.
we never range more than 15-18x for that exact reason.
the LM is our choice of champions and an occasional short mag within range ;) "

the 378 and 338 lapua are some big cases and may even be pushing the limits of standard Savage bolt action rifles and barrels.
