"...model of 17th C. field cannon" is junk in my opinion
« on: May 24, 2012, 02:58:25 AM »
This is posted here as an educational item as well as an alert to anyone who might be tempted to buy a certain model cannon thinking that, because of the early date on it, it is an antique.  It is not.

This is included in a sale of otherwise nice stuff, but is a piece of junk in my opinion.  It is not antique but a modern "decorator" item.

The auction description is carefully-worded so the auction house is not misrepresenting the item.  They would be more honest to use words like "20th Century" or "reproduction" but at least when you read their description carefully, they have not declared it an antique, which is probably about as much as we can expect.

To me that looks like some of those spanish made decorators, they have sometimes nice looking carriages but the barrels seem to be always very thin-walled and strange looking, look down the bore shows a completely hollow and very rough interior.
They also have most of the time some small brass plaque nailed on the carriage which has the "model" of the cannon and some other info on it. The model in question also has this plaque. If it is really one of those spanish decorators, the price estimate of $450-650 is unbelievable... I think I paid $10 for the one spanish decorator I have.

A piece of bad 60s-70s faux Mediterranean shelf art, and an incomplete and unfinished one at that. Someone got carried away reading Fredrick Forsythe's "The Gun".  What appears to be a pine carriage with water-raised and flame aged grain. Pallet strapping decorations and ball-headed nails. What is up with the tabs of strapping sticking up between some of the spokes? Actually this piece is a must have for anyone looking for set dressing for remakes of vintage porn movies. If they do get $450 or better let me know. I've got a companion piece of a slightly more Arts and Crafts Movement style that I'll part with for half that much.

Cheesy comes to mind....
Mr president I do not cling to either my gun or my Bible.... my gun is holstered on my side so I may carry my Bible and quote from it!
