Speaking of the last 40 years..not including Marlingtons..
Speaking in generalities..out of the box..my experience..

 1) Accuracy... Marlin

 2) dependability...Ruger

 3) price... Marlin

Also in my opinion..for basic prices the way to go for accuracy in Rimfire..... is Savage...

you did not include the marlin 795 in this contest? we have one that is very accurate out to 120 yards and has never failed in any way. cheap ammo? yes. but no broken parts or problems. Only thing is,(learned from trial and error), I should have bought the bolt action with the tube magazine. The kids shoot way too fast with the semi-auto and I get sore thumbs loading thier mags! they could load the tube by themselves.

I have had marlin 60s and have Ruger 10/22s.  Right now, I have a Marlin 795.  I consider the 795 to be simply a model 60 with magazine rather than tube fed.  The 60 with a full tube gives some forward weight bias, which I consider a plus for shooting from a rest..which I always try to manage when squirrel hunting.
To each his own though..my mainstay 10/22 is my 1st year of production carbine..very accurate..much more accurate generally, than later models.

Both fine rifles capable of great accuracy and dependability. If you like aftermarket bells and whistles go with the Ruger.

While I have been Ruger fan since the mid 60's (revolver and rifles), I am not a fan of their 10/22's at all.   Five of the six I've had where not reliable, the sixth a full custom I can't say as it's only had about 50 rounds fired before I changed my mind on using it and put it in the safe to stay years ago.

I'm not a huge Marlin fan either, most of mine have been levers, but I have heard a heck of a lot of good comments about their auto RF's.   The 17VS, my only current Marlin, is a fantastic rifle, and deadly accurate.

So based on only my personal experience with the 10/22's, some Marlin's, and what I've heard about the Marlin rimfires FWIW...

1) out of the box accuracy - Marlin

 2) dependability - Marlin

 3) price - Marlin

My rimfire auto rifle of choice is a High Standard/JC Higgins 31 that has not missed a beat in the 53 years I've owned it.   Why it still lives here and five of the 10/22's do not, nor the Browning or Weatherby (both fine rifles), nor many other Rf auto rifles I've owned just because I prefer the one that has proved its salt every time without fail.   No other 22 auto rimfire rifle can replace it.

a few more people thinking the m 60 is more accurate.

all these guy's here know that... no 2 rifles are the same.
lottsa stipulations involved for any opinions to be valid for anyone to purchase by.
only asumptions of one's experiances.
i'll now add my families experiances..........
we have 7 10/22's  and 10 model 60's,  with the right ammo of each perfered, one is just as accurate as the other. far as dependability, if it was not right or if in question... when you got it.... both of these manufacturers would make it right. you should have sent it back or returned it to where you got it.
if it was used, thats kinda your fault... you asked for it.
now for price, the only part of this comparison i would agree to.......... marlin

For Hunting right out the box and ready to go Id say Marlin, the stock fits right and the sights though cheap, do work.
The cheap fat sights work great at night shooting (racoon hunting) and robust, though delicate & slow to reload the tube mag is pretty reliable.

Ruger carbine stock is small ,sights arnt great for hunting (break off easy) next to useless at night you have to go instinctive shooting or spray and pray thats when the high capacity mags come in handy
10/22 has a heavy and gritty trigger compared to the marlin.

The one ruger plus is its easy to clear a jamb faster than the marlin,
When hunting the mag release makes it WAY too easy to drop a mag in brush (happens allot) 10/22 hunters take 2-3 mags with them incase one gets dropped in a marsh.

one my hunting buddys used a ole beat 10/22 ruger the rear sight was broken off (he never used them) the front was drifted some to the side, he used 3 times the amount of ammo we used, he'd walk the rounds in like a machine gunner hence his nick name 'Brick'  cause he always bought bricks of .22's to feed "The Beast".

IS it true that Ruger 10/22 shooters use 3 times more ammo than Marlin 60 shooters?

I own both, so it is a loaded question, I prefer the Remington Model 552 over either.

I've never owned a model 60, I have owned three 10/22's.  Each have be more than sufficiently accurate to take squirrels out to 50+ yards.  The only reliability problem I've had is one bad magazine that was quickly identified and discarded.  I've owned my current 10/22 for 25 years.  The only thing I've done to it is to add a Burris 3-9 compact scope, a volquartson hammer and a sling.

I have both & will take a Marlin over the 10-22, both have rottne triggers but teh Marlin dont need anything other than that, the 10-22 needs sevral upgrades to compare with teh mod 60.
10-22 needs, a longer stock (unless your a midget or preschooler), the mag release is a hassle until replaced, the mag itself is a chore to load ammo into, dont have a last round fired bolt hold open (but certain year 60's dont either), most extractors need replaced (unless you like digging out spent hulls yourself), & the trigger stinks but can be replaced.
The 60 needs, the trigger worked...............and thats about it.
I've never been lost,,,just rite fearsome confused for a few months.

I have both in composite stocks with the same Leupold stocks. The Marlin is more accurate, easier to load and both are reliable. The Ruger though is a better handling firearm. My choice-Marlin

I have owned both but I have decided to stay with the 10/22. One reason is that I like to tinker with my guns and I don't remember having one that I did not change something on. There is a ton of things you can do with the 10/22.
The Marlin guns seen to have a stock set up for scopes without enough drop for comfortable use of the iron sights. The Ruger has enough drop but sights so small my 66 year old eyes can't use them.
But the biggie is the magazines. I preferred the tube type until I bent one. Marlin out of commission. Bad Ruger mag, drop it insert another.
