While I have been Ruger fan since the mid 60's (revolver and rifles), I am not a fan of their 10/22's at all. Five of the six I've had where not reliable, the sixth a full custom I can't say as it's only had about 50 rounds fired before I changed my mind on using it and put it in the safe to stay years ago.
I'm not a huge Marlin fan either, most of mine have been levers, but I have heard a heck of a lot of good comments about their auto RF's. The 17VS, my only current Marlin, is a fantastic rifle, and deadly accurate.
So based on only my personal experience with the 10/22's, some Marlin's, and what I've heard about the Marlin rimfires FWIW...
1) out of the box accuracy - Marlin
2) dependability - Marlin
3) price - Marlin
My rimfire auto rifle of choice is a High Standard/JC Higgins 31 that has not missed a beat in the 53 years I've owned it. Why it still lives here and five of the 10/22's do not, nor the Browning or Weatherby (both fine rifles), nor many other Rf auto rifles I've owned just because I prefer the one that has proved its salt every time without fail. No other 22 auto rimfire rifle can replace it.
