how big are groundhogs suppossed to get?
« on: May 28, 2012, 12:53:21 PM »
I got one that seems to be 15-20lbs... I thought they were supposed to be 12lbs.  I don't know anyone around here that really gets into that stuff and would pay me good for it, but I'm still curious.  Thanks for the info responders.

Back in the day the locals here and contests every summer, biggest pig wins. It's been a while but if I'm not mistaken there was one taken at the 30lb mark. That would be a big pig.

Don't know how big they are "supposed" to get but when I was kid back in early 60's on our farm, I saw two of em drag our full grown Collie down their burrow!  Didn't see Prince for three days.  When he returned he was all bit up and could hardly walk.  He never chased
a ground hog after that.  Whenever he saw that pair he would run and hide in the barn just a whimpering and a drooling.  Strangest thing I ever saw.

they DO look like little retarded bear cubs  ;D

I've just barely glimpsed them on that property before (if I remember correctly), crossing a good creek to get to my deer stand just before first light.  They were legal to get but I wasn't about to scare the deer for a rat/bear hybrid.  This was the first time I ever got to dial my scope in and watch one for a bit, let alone get a good shot picked out and actually pull the trigger.  I didn't autopsy it's head but it didn't seem to have an exit hole on the offside of it's head.  Is .22lr a bit weak for them?  Maybe the biggins' at least?!  ::)

I never weighed them but I shot some hefty ones on my cousins farm if she didn't live about forty miles from me I would be over there shooting them all summer. I never ate a big woodchuck but I have made stew out of the smaller ones and it was like rabbit.

I shot a big momma that was about 25 lbs.  Most of her kits I shot were sub 10 and the male was about 15 lbs.

I have trapped them for farmers that weighed about 25 to 30 pounds---the small ones are much better to eat though--nice white meat--does real good when you bake them in a roster pan in the oven.

I'm thinking of looking for it's kin saturday.  My wife has stuff to do during the day so I'll be out in the brush by the creek... this time I'll dress it out outdoors instead of making the mistake of bringing it inside and p/o ing the wife.  I'm thinking crock pot and season salt.  what kind of sauce for them?
