air rifle target ideas
« on: May 28, 2012, 03:52:11 PM »
Looking for ideas for our backyard shooting galery. While I'm cooking on the grill my son and I have a shooting competition with the air rifle we built a box from plywood scraps and lined it with drywall. We setup can lids, bottle caps,we bought a bag of plastic cowboy and indians (like the plastic soldiers), golf tee's with super balls on them. Any other ideas for some creative fun targets?

paint balls on golf tees. a smear of honey, jelly, or syrup on a white piece of paper and shoot the flies that land on it. necco wafers, animal crackers. plastic soldiers. flat washers hung from string. ping pong balls or PRACTICE golf balls( don't shoot real golf balls!bad ricochets!)

Place bread crusts at 20-30 yards, and wait for the sparrows to come.

I like folding a ketchup packet in half and taping it. That makes it kinda 'pressurized' when the pellet hits, splattering it pretty good.

My favorite backyard hunting is for snails. They never can seem to run away before I get 'em.  ;)

I wouldn't be shooting any super balls; sometimes they shoot back...

This is more for BB guns - red rider style. I kept a bunch of cub scouts happy and busy by suspending a bunch of empty soda cans from a rope at about 30 feet.  I used a small length of twine to tie to the pop top then suspend from the rope.  I didnt' have to reset the targets and the boys could shoot for a long time.  I think I had 10 boys at a time whanging away, after 15 minutes they'd rotate and I'd get another 10.  All I had to do was keep the guns full of bbs.  For more accurate and powerful airguns this might not be much of a challenge.

Empty (did I say EMPTY?) shotgun shells at varying distances, kinda like a 'random distance buffalo silhouette shoot'. The colors show up well enough to see even with my tired old eyes.

Active targets or is that re-active, are the most fun. I like to mix it up, Starlings and Cats in the backyard.

Empty Quiver we need to hang out some time.lol
The most fun I ever had with a pellet gun was back when I was a kid. There was a local farmer with a small farm dump on his property and he decided he was going to bury it. So he breaks out the dozer and starts scratching around and out come the rats, everywhere.
Now this was the days of the 10 pump Crossman's and I liked to have wore that gun out that day. There is no telling how many rats me and my buds demised. I was surely tired when I got home, and that included a bike ride back to the house.
