an odd note on SA grips....
« on: May 31, 2012, 07:41:31 AM »
I've only been playing with SA revolvers for a couple years now, since I lucked into a FA revolver that fit my meager budget.

I've been looking at them and playing with them a good bit, and I've reached the conclusion that SA pistols are primitive and retarded in the gripping.  The bore is very high, the grip is kinda smallish and usually quite difficult to change,  looking at the numbers, and looking on paper, these are crude handling weapons that aren't much better than a Kentucky Pistol.

And when you look at all the modern autos, they throw that stuff around like crazy.  "Super low bore axis"  "Change-able back straps to fit any hand" etc.  Those are some kinda fantastic looking gun.

Ya' know?  I just absolutely freakin' LOVE that the SA revolver completely flies in the face of reason, and often times points like an extension of our own bodies.  Inspite of all that is new, very little in the way of ergonomics seems to have improved.

Not to bash on the new generation of combat autos, mind you- They're great weapons for combative people, I suppose.  But for my purposes, I just love the feel of an SA for my humble playing at the range and woods rambling.  Some day I'll learn how to shoot 'em decently.

Maybe it's just part of being old school, but many of the so called improvements over the years don't fancy me at all.   When it comes to a basic handgun (any firearm for that matter), I'd much rather do it with a SA or a single shot handgun than any DA or auto any day.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Bob Munden seems to do a pretty decent job of "making do" with such an archaic, crude handling design!

If he ever switches over to a faster and more efficient design he might turn into a fair pistolero!!

Guess I'm just old, my faorite semi auto pistols are 1911 with wood grips, shoot them in 22 rf, 9mm, 38 Super, and 45 acp.  My single actions are all Rugers, some from back in the late 50s up to my latest in 357 the 50th Aniverswery model.  The rest of them couple of 22s, 32 H&R, and 44 all wear issue grips and are just fine.  Between the two entirely different handgun platforms, have to say don't want to give up either style love them both.

Im lovin' my 50th 357 too, but I got a set of Private's grips to dress it, a light spalted maple that looks good on the deep blue, and just a tad wider than the originals for my long fingers. My loads are just cast bullets in 357 cases at 38Spl. equiv.

I know the single actions aren't a super duper hi-cap something that'll shoot 15 or more times before reloading but my SA Rugers just feel right in my hand. I'm more comfortable with them than any other pistol.

Talking about bore center height, a DA S&W or Colts like the Python etc have even higher bore centers above the grip.  Some of them like a S&W Model 19 also point shoot very well.
The only Auto that point shoots for me is the flat mainspring housing equipped 1911.
As far as quickdraw for autoloaders, back in the 60s when Jeff Cooper was in California we had them quite often.  Live ammo, not wax or blanks.
A single action that points like an extension of your arm is called a '51 Navy.  A 71 Opentop also rates pretty high in that department, with the SAA high on the list, but not as intuitive as the opentop Colts, but everyone is different in their grip and bone alignment and familiarity.

They just got single actions "right" early on....

They were made for a purpose by people who used them in a time when it could mean life or death. Today its all about marketing for many makers.
