6.5x284 in long action
« on: May 31, 2012, 07:41:55 AM »
6.5x284.  my desired caliber for a long range rifle build.  Was going to have one built on a remington action, but I have a savage 111 in 30/06 I have desided to either sell or change as I have 2 other 06 rifles that were given to me by my grandfather and will go to my kids and this one sits.  Rather hunt with his guns and know a part of him is still hunting with me.
Doable or should I just sell the 06 and have it built on something else

Sure & you could get a long throat to seat the 140 out there good to utilize the action.

Both of these! I am thinking about doing a 6.5x284 build as well, and it will be done on a long action just for these two reasons.

I have a 700 ADL long action that is waiting for me to do something with it. The 6.5 x 284 was one of my first thoughts and is still close to the top. My other idea would seem even more strange to most folks.  ;)

Hint...hint...6.5/06 has the same ballistics, feeds better, and holds one more round in the magazine.....

The 6.5x55 will work in a long action.  If the chamber is cut with a match reamer it will have the same performance as a 6.5-284.  6.5x55 brass is quite common from many sources.

I have a 6.5x55 on a mod 70 Frt Wt and a 6.5x06 on a mod 700 with a Shilen barrel. Both are wonderfully accurate! In a strong action the 6.5x55 comes awfully close to makeing the 6.5x06 vrlocities.

I have built a ton of 6.5 swedes, and the 6.5 x284 is another animal. I have built 7 of them, and am currently building one. I love the old 110 long actions, one I am building is a 30/06 action. In most short actions, you cannot have a repeater , and have the longer 140 and longer bullets set up at the premium length for accuracy, they are too long to function thru the mag.  As far as feeding goes, mine have been flawless thru the long actions. I have 96 swedes, 98 actions I rebarreled to 6.5 swede and a long action 110 with a douglas stainless match barrel, and at long range the 6.5x284 does much better, especially with 26-30" barrel. Dont get me wrong, the swede is my alltime favorite cartridge, and have taken a ton of deer, yotes and chucks with them, built over 100 in the last 25 years. JMHO.

I see nothing wrong with building it on the 110 action versus Savage's short action. There must be a reason that Savage builds the 6.5x284 on long actions instead of short actions.
