CVA Apex 35 Whelen

I have a CVA Apex 35 that I bought last year. I have had trouble getting my gun to group. I have tried several different brands of ammo some are better than others but none are very consistent. I was told that the scope base that comes with the could be flexing and causing the problem. I have Leupold rings and a zeiss conquest scope. The other issue is I can't find a different base to fit the gun. Any suggestions?

go to the h&r centerfire rifle forum on here and read the FAQs on improving a handi rifle. some or all of the tips there may apply to your gun as well.

It appears the Apex takes the same base as other CVAs, they're available online at many retail sources, see the sticky on bases. Of course, proper mounting it required, checking for a loose base or rings is the place to start, make sure thread locker is used on the base screws.

over sized hinge pin IMO is most likely what will be needed.

When you remove the barrel, can you slide the pin easily through the frame or the barrel lug hole?

Get the DuraSight one piece Dead-On scope base and ring setup that should take care of it.

I'm having the same problem. Both the Hornady Superformance 200 gr. and their new Custom 175 gr. shoot 4" groups. CVA tech guy first suggested a heavier bullet, but only Remington loads a 250 gr @ 2400 fps, which I don't want at all. They are sending me a Durasight scope mount, saying that should cure the problem. I suspicion something else, maybe the rate of twist, which is 1 in 14.

if you can push the pin through the frame or the barrel lug easily, it needs a 2x hinge pin from Bellm.

I have the same gun in .308 and I had the same problem, the DuraSight one piece mount took care of it. Also my gun prefers free recoil at the bench and the front sandbag near the hinge area. Now I get same hole groups when I do my part and I'm very happy.

Wow Muznut, that is remarkable that a scope mount could make such a difference. Should have my Durasight by mid-week. Hoping I get the same result, because I really like this gun/.35 Whelen combination.

Was yours shooting as badly as mine, and was it preferential to a certain brand?

Yes my gun didn't group that well for me it may have been ok for some but I like tight groups. You may also find that your groups get better after firing a few boxes of cartridges due to barrel break in.

Wow! That's all I know to say. I'm near speechless.

Durasight+Bellm 2X hinge pin+front sandbag under the hinge= cloverleafs @ 100 yds with the Hornady 175 gr. ctgs. Get this: the Hornady 200 gr. Superformance cut one ragged hole with the 175 gr. loads. I'm stunned at the vast improvement.

I had the same problem with the .243 barrel on a Rossi Trifecta. After epoxying the base, same hole "hunerd" yard groups are possible when I do my part. Glad you got it worked out, I bet that .35 is fun!
