Question about markings on barrels

I have a question.  I have seen some barrels with REP in a circle on the side of the barrel.  What does this mean?  I have seen barrels with and without it.  I just bought a 243 compact that has it on it and I think my 30-30 has it but I have seen some guns in shops without it.  I thought I read somewhere that this indicated replacement barrel put on the gun.  If that was the case then my 30-30 I bought new would've been used.

                  It is a proof mark. It stands for (Remington Proof). It means that the barrel was proofed at the factory & is safe to use.

                  The barrel stamping (REP) in an oval circle stands for (Remington English Proof).  All rifles & shotguns made at the plant will have this stamping. Also any factory fit barrels will also have this proof stamp. This marking shows that this barrel has passed proof testing. The H&R Gardner barrels will only have a (P) stamp on them, it means the same thing.

Now with that question answered, following the REP there is also a letter.  Is that the date code.  These are both on newer CBA receivers.  One has a Q and one has a U.

               The (Q) or (U) stamp after the (REP) stamp is not a date code. It is a code for the person doing the proofing. Each gallery shooter has their own proof letter stamp. So if there is a problem they know who to go to.
