Just so you newcomers know ol Tom learned how to trap those 500# prehistoric bvrs that roamed Wisc and Mn  many years ago so you know he has some experience under his rawhide saber tooth tiger belt!!!

Do I qualify as a newcomer, since I haven't been around for a couple years?

I guess we all know that another site is currently down.

But, as long as I'm here, I do have to say that Tom taught me all I know about beaver trapping.  Not all he knows, mind you, but, all I know.

Actually, in this age of good dog proof traps, I may be looking for a little re-training on coons.

Retraining on dog proofs? It's kinda just load and go, set where ya see a track and wait till the coon comes back. lol DPs aren't the end all as I still catch coon in trails coming up to places where DPs have set for days untouched.
O-yeah am I and old guy or new guy here???
I do like good whiskey.

Hello,  I have talked about starting trapping for years and this year I finally decided to try.  I live in the upper peninsula of michigan surrounded by forest.  I have seen coyotes, fox and bobcats in the area.  From what I've read and talked to a couple trappers, land trapping is harder (easier to make mistakes) than water trapping.  I've read to use lure only, bait only and to use both on dirt hole sets.  Is there any consensus about this.
Thanks in advance, and I will probably continue to ask alot of questions

You can use a variety. At ome sets, just use lur. At others use lure and bait. Then you can also go with the triumverate--lure,bait and urine.
 Ask 100 trappers a question--you will get 100 opinions.

Guess I should make an intro here in the trapping forum. Have been trapping since I was 12 except the military time. Lots and lots of coon mainly, but other fur too. Beaver is easiest for me. Don't have to go looking for them. So many farmers begging to get rid of them here. Still never too old to learn so will listen to all. Don't do much trapping anymore, arthritis and the cold. Have bought fur for the last 12 years. After looking at the recent posted prices here I might renew the permit for this upcoming season. Have lost over 3/4 of my customers due to low fur prices. Plus high gas cost too. Thanks to everyone here and be safe.
