encore reloading manual?
« on: February 02, 2004, 04:19:56 AM »
I have seen load manuals for the contender but never for the encore.  I shoot a 308 rem. 15 inch barrel and have recently started reloading for it.  I would like some load data for that caliber in a pistol.  I ordered some hornady .308 130gr. SP Pistol interlock.  They are desinged to expand at the pistol velocities, but I have no load data for them.

Both the Hornady and Speer manuals have information in the pistol section for rifle cartridges.  Don't have them in front of me right now, but I do believe the Hornady book has .308 Win for pistols.  Otherwise, the load data found in the rifle section will work.  May not be the fastest load one could use, but it will work.  I shoot the same ammo from my .30-30 Contender that I load for my rifles.  Also, some of the people I know shoot factory ammo in their .243 and .308 Encores.

Always start at or around the minimum load and work your way up on the powder charges.

Hornady should provide you with data, I'd give them a call.  I see they took most of their load data off of their web site.  Guess they want to sell more reloading manuals.

You can use load data for 308 rifles, but obviously your muzzle velocities will be lower.

Difference in Contender and Encore...
« Reply #3 on: February 02, 2004, 06:14:40 AM »
Contender is more inclined to wildcats to get better performance at lower pressures.  The Encore is not limited by these pressure concerns, so factory loads and normal data work fine.  Most of the manuals list the fastest burning powders first, these loads would work fine with the shorter barrels.
Just a note about Powder companies taking thier data off thier websites to sell more books....
Hogdgon has revolutionized the whole idea of the Re-loading Manual.  Lasy year, they started publishing what they call the 'Annual Manual'.  It can be found at most shops that sell manuals, and some magazine stands.  It is reasonably priced at 7.99.  They will also send you a condensed version for free.  Accurate will send you thier condensed manual for free also.
....make it count

Lyman's 48th edition has Encore specific load data, although it doesn't have pressure info listed because they were all velocity tested in an Encore barrel.  I have the manual, if you're interested I can email you all of the data

Selmer,

That would be a great help, if it's not too much bother.
