BAR rebarreled ?
« on: February 02, 2004, 07:04:27 AM »
would it be possible to rebarrel a Browning BAR in 308 to 358 . I had planed on finding a 760 or 7600 in 35 rem. and have it rechambered but they are hard to find .A friend suggested a bar and i really like that idea ,if it can be done. :biggun:

Re-barreling won't be the problem, the gas port will.  I don't know anyone who would do this although I've read of it's being done.  I would bet the price would be truly amazing.  The 760 in 35 Rem to 358 Win is easy, it's just a rechamber and in a pump even, nothing else need change.  The gas operated Browning would present a lot of problems..  You must balance the energy needed to operate the mechanism and to overcome the return spring with the load and the size of the gas port.  Good luck!

Remember, rebarreling a 760 or 7600 is a bunch easier than the autoloader.  A 308 would be pretty easy..  The barrel extension is removed(sometimes quite a chore in itself)it is simple to rebarrel and reset the headspace with the bolt head.  So anything on the 308-243 order would work..  Good luck,,
