G2 question
« on: June 04, 2012, 05:44:12 AM »
I am in the process of making a thumbhole stock for my son's G2 contender. The grip bolt screws into a hex fitting on the frame. Inside the bolt hole there appears to be something that the bolt pushes against. The bolt also is indented on the end. If it does push against something, what is it and what does it do? Otherwise I'll be forced to take it apart and figure it out for myself.  Pat

You do not want the grip bolt going up against anything.  If it does, it's hitting the hammer or hammer sprimg and will not allow the hammer to cock or stay cocked.

Yes, you need to get a shorter bolt or add some washers to the one you have. Even if its hitting and will still allow the gun to cock the pressure from the bolt could cause premature firing!!!

Had that problem with a custom stock set made it a hair trigger shimmed the bolt with washers and no more problem.
I have also had to add  washers inside the top of grip on some grips to get it to clear the hammer so it would cock.

No,No guys,  I'm not having a problem at all. I was just wondering what was up in that bolthole and why was there an indention(factory made) on the threaded end of the grip bolt. Also it's a G2. As to where I'm at: It's inletted; the thumbhole is made; overall shape is cut out and I'm ready to drumsand. Inletting was a bear as I couldn't use my drillpress and router bits and my small bandsaw because of the frame angle and the length of the stock.  Pat

Yes, inletting these encore / contender stocks does have it's challenges.
I'm still inletting the stock I'm working on. It's a slow process. With lack of foresight, I cut out the rough angle / inlett for the action floor on the table saw using multiple passes. That went well, and then I discovered how difficult it is to drill holes on an acute angle. I ended up inletting the 5/8ths hole with an air die grinder. Next time, I will drill the required holes before I cut the angles.

Doing the fine inletting with round files and a scraper now. I may bed the floor of the action with Devcon or Marine tex or similar.

I am sleeving the bolt hole with a piece of aluminum arrow shaft that fits the 1/4 x 20 bolt perfectly. It will be epoxied in place. Condsidering bedding the action shaft / hole also........we'll see. Not suer how important it is to have the hole fit the shft like a glove, never having  had a chance to "inspect" a professionally made encore stock.

Pat, what do you have in mind for the bolt, at the bottom of the grip, to cover the bolt head? I was thinking of making a brass bushing, to countersink into the grip and have the bolt head recessed into the bushing.

I'm always interested in others ideas.......

Spokerider,  the large hole for the frame shaft(for no better word) doesn't have to fit tightly in my opinion. The bolt hole(1/4") is the more important one. Use a metal washer under the bolt head-thickness doesn't matter, unless you're shimming. You can just leave the hole as is or make a grip cap out of contrasting wood and screw it on with small(#4) screws. I'm out of town so I still don't know what is up that hole.  Pat
